Westminster Principle holds that you can do whatever you like within the bounds of the law. Reality is that the only caveat on GST importation is that you can't do it yourself. 700 to you, 700 to your mate? Done. No guilt. (this is the reason I'm in favour of low value imports attracting GST, because the dodges are too simple to get)

Yes but to counter, various reports have identified that it will cost more to collect the GST than what it returns in revenue. One of the reports actually recommended that in addition to the GST, shoppers would also have to pay a 'processing fee' to cover the cost of the tax agencies actually collecting the $$, either that or the government cuts something else to find the money.

Also to counter the claims of the local retailers that it is costing them customers, I don't know about you guys but a serious factor in me buying most of my stuff is that I can get it cheap. If I had to pay Australian RRP for a groupset I would probably buy 2nd hand bits or just not buy bits at all. I wouldn't just accept paying an extra 200% because the loophole was closed, I would simply change my buying behavior.

End of the day I could see the whole thing backfiring, in order to appear 'fair' and appease some stakeholders they could inadvertently both create a cost burden and depress demand or lower the living standards of voters, remember its not just bike bits getting bought from OS.

It was OT but well written post. I too would hate to go back to living in a non-competetive, protected Australia with it's outrageously inflated prices.

Would you prefer living in a hypercompetitive, zero safety net Australia without outrageously inflated wages (and the living standards they bring)??

I personally am pretty hardcore libertarian, and anti taxation in general, but there is a place for taxes and quality of life amongst this debate - your average middle to upper class Australian has no appreciation for the fact that their standard of living stands on the shoulders on their taxes, and that the alleged tax havens around the world are generally awful places to live compared to here.

Protectionism might be an unhelpful approach, but you don't practice reverse protectionism if you want your nation to prosper either. I don't think we really want to subsidise overseas imports, which is what is happening when we don't collect tax.

Pushy's got a Australia Day special.
$40 off order +$300.
Code: Aussie40

Couldn't help myself and grabbed a Fly6.

Now sitting on the fence about the Exposure Six Pack light.
Wonder how much I can sell my 6 months old Exposure Maxx-D for.

So tempted to buy one for a Pub bike/down the shops bike.... I think the Mrs would freak if I bought another bike though. Great value in the up to $800 budget range.
