Questions about purchasing bicycles and parts
by tuco » Mon Aug 27, 2007 10:04 am
I need to replace my rear tyre. I've been recommended a gator skin.
Maybe I haven't checked even web sites yet but most are stating they're a good wet weather. Most of my riding is in the dry so do I need a tyre which is good in the wet when it could be letting me down in the dry conditions?
Any other suggestions?
I think we can do better. I KNOW we can do better.

ProBikeKit...
For a budding C grader, treat yourself to a pair of Vittoria Evo Open Corsa CX.

The Maxxis Detonators were recommended by blokes on this forum, so I bought them for the Europa. Have only ridden them in the dry though and they only have a 100km or so on them, but they seem good. Price wise, buying them locally was the same price as over the internet ... and, of course, I didn't have to pay postage so they were cheaper Interestingly, they weren't hanging up in the shop, I had to order them in, but that was a same day effort as the local distributor keeps them in stock.

I had a good bike ... so I fixed it

Went for the ultra gatorskin. $60 at the lbs. Could have got them for $50 across the road at Toys are us but they couldn't get them in until next week and I need it for this weekend.
I know I could have got them from Probikekit for about $35 but adding postage would have got it up to $47. Would have been good if I needed other items to get per item postage down and if I I didn't need the tyre for this weekend.

I got the same from Torpedo7 a while back, actually I got 4 for AU$100... one of their super specials, they were a wee bit hard so obviously old stock but once they were on for a while they softened up.Saying that I only race on them as they wear out way fast!.
PS I have my first Ultra Gatorskin on the rear training wheel at the mo...was recomended it by someone very knowledgable...but beware, maybee it was because it was still new but it put me sideways big time in the wet last week...so not sure of its wet weather capabilities!

My Bianchi came standard with Conti 4000s and so far haven't punctured and after about 3000km, appear to be wearing well. I will buy them again.

I've had my Ultra Gatorskins for a while (first puncture last weekend). They ride pretty well in the dry, so don't worry about that. I've only ridden them once in anger in the wet (racing from Tharwa to Apollo Road and back) so they didn't have any real opportunities to misbehave as there was no real cornering required, just the turnaround and that was neutral.
They aren't as supple as the Open Corsa EVO's or the Pro2Race's, but at normal lbs prices they're half the cost and from the way they're looking after a bit over a 1,000 km, they'll last a good bit longer.
I loved the Vittoria's, but as Toolonglegs said, they wear heaps fast.
