Which bike gps is better? I'm thinking about both and I was wondering if the bryton is better for like $30-40 more?

Went through the same dilema... Did more research than was actually needed and ended up getting the Garmin. Major reasons for choosing the Garmin: it has better integration to Strava (Bryton is a 2 step process); the Garmin has an option for 1 second sampling, which makes for more accurate MTB tracking; Garmin speed sensor records speed and cadence at the same time (Bryton does one or the other but both at once) and lastly local support for the Garmin seems to be better than for Bryton. YMMV.

FYI, I paid $299 for Garmin 500, speed/cadence sensor and regular HRM from Cecil Walker (Aus stock and warrantee).

They currently have this bundle for $295.
I'm looking to get one next week (hopefully)

Oops, you're right, I just checked my email and I paid $295.

The 500 doesn't have mapping or colour.

Its equivalent would be the Rider 35.

Not sure what you mean by this, Nick ... what is my 35 doing when it shows me my speed, heart rate and cadence?

the bryton will use gps for speed, if cadence is being measured. i have the rider 35 too. very impressed with it.

I was referring to the small speed/cadence sensor unit, not the main GPS unit. The Garmin speed/cadence sensor will record both cadence and (traditional) speed/distance using the wheel magnet, in addition to recording lat/lng using the GPS. So you effectively get two sets of speed/distance data. The Bryton speed/cadence sensor has a small switch, which you have to choose between speed or cadence. So it will only record one or the other at any one time. If used on a road bike, then you don't miss much choosing cadence, as the GPS is accurate enough. But on MTB bike you get much more accurate distance data if using the speed sensor setting. E.g. on a known 25km trail I ride, my GPS only unit shows I've ridden only about 21km.

I'm putting a Garmin sensor unit on a bike I'm getting in the next week or so, to use with my existing Bryton - wonder whether it would also display both?

Bryton Rider 50 would be my pick

Bryton seem to offer more bang for your buck but is the quality the same? I'll be looking at these 2 units in the next few months..

Use Garmin Connect (of which I know Bryton has a similar site) and also Strava.

The Strava part won me over at the time for the Garmin 500 bundle as the Bryton is a two step process as someone mentioned before.

I have used both units and can see why Garmin got a bit dirty over the look and style of the Bryton when they first evolved.

Very happy with the Garmin unit, but it will come down to user preferences this one.

Garmin is the established brand, James, with a more mature product.

The Bryton is a cheaper copy, albeit with a better battery life.

My LBS suggested the Bryton over the Garmin 500 even though it was almost $100 less. They said that they sell the Brytons about 1:3 however about 15% of those who purchased the 500 are usually back in stall with some type of complaint about their purchase. Never had one with the Bryton.

For that reason, I just picked up a Bryton 30 (though firmware says its a 35) just last night. Will have a chance to test it out tomorrow

For me :- Garmin all the way.

1) I've got other Garmin products which have never let me down.
2) My wife's company get Garmin products for me very cheap lol

Garmin Edge 200 or Bryton 20? I don't think I need a heart monitor or cadence monitoring. Just want to log where I've been and how quickly.

I don't really 'needed' it either but thought it would be nice to have. If your can stretch the budget a bit get the next one up. Always nice to have a better understanding of your body.

Anyway not having any experience with the Garmin units, I found the Bryton to be quite easy even if there is a 2 step process to get the data uploaded. So Bryton if you're on a bit of a budget

I use a Bryton 35 with Garmin GCS10 dual speed/cadence sensor & Garmin HR monitor... Works fine.

The heart monitors are identical looking.

No wonder they're being sued.
