mountain bike purchase...

I am pretty clued up on road bikes and components but am now after a mountain bike for occasional trail rides... Looking to buy in the next week so wonder if anybody spotted any spectacular bikes and good prices around right now.

I am leaning towards a 29" wheel as will probably use it on the road as well. Thanks in advance. Budget is $500-$1000 or it its extra extra special perhaps a bit more.
