Rebuilding my wheel

A few months ago my ultegra rear hub cracked.
I've now decided to rebuild the wheel since the rim is still good...
I've got to choose between buying a Ultrgra hub brand new or a Dura ace 7700 hub off eBay

Save yourself some cash and pick up some 105 hubs which are almost identical to ultegra hubs.

Just make sure that when you get them you check the grease levels and properly adjust the cones and they will roll as sweet as!

You can buy a pair from Ribble for just over $60.

Are all the Shimano hub measurements you mentioned identical or within 1mm? Other wise you'll be forking out for new length spokes too.

well id be lacing it with new spokes, far as I've been told 105 hubs are no where near the quality.. and as I've stated in my post I do not wish to downgrade to 105 hub since id be replacing a ultegra

There is indeed an increase in quality as you go from 105 to Ultegra then Dura-Ace. But its a small one. 105 hubs are very good, roll smoothly, and are very robust. Ultegra, etc, are marginally better - but you are paying a lot more for a small increase.

If you want Ultegra, then go for it. But don't fall into the "105 is no good" trap. I use a mix of 105, Ultegra and Dura-Ace gear on my bike, and interchange it reasonably often - and so long as its well-maintained, I honestly can't tell when I have 105 vs Ultegra vs Dura-Ace stuff on...

If you look at the tech diagrams the difference between 105 and Ultegra hubs is the axle and the QR skewer, otherwise they are identical. I doubt you could tell the difference, in fact a low grease badly adjusted Ultegra hub will perform and feel 10x worse that a well greased properly adjusted 105 hub.

IMO shimano hubs a very similar, except for the entry level 2200 and sora ones which I could never get super smooth. Ultegra hubs are going to weigh less than 105 but if you can find the time to maintain them they will perform just as well, I'm willing to say that the Tiagra hubs will be just as smooth as the Ultegra hubs if well maintained (the hubs in my R-500 wheelset are brilliant, I assume they are Tiagra).

Can't comment about the Circus Monkey hubs as I have never used them, but there are plenty of cheap "weight weenie" hubs out there, see Bikehubstore

SL218 Rear Hub - 218 grams
UltraLight Front Road Hub - 32h - 80g
Sapim CX-Ray
Teamed up with the Open Pro's, I should be looking at around 1450g for the set.

So in the end it should cost me $298 + $130 in labour to re-build both wheels, or should I go for a Pro-lite set? bearing in mind that I'm still around 98kg

The Pro-Lite Merano should be fine for you. You're very close to our recommended max weight for the Bracciano.

If its just a training wheelset, the Como I would recommend without hesitation - they are strong, despite being heavy they roll very well and have good aero characterics.

Find all of the required measurements and enter them into a calculator. You will need your ERD (effective rim diameter, usually found on the Manufacturer website, BUT ITS BEST TO MEASURE IT YOURSELF)the hub Flange (how far away the spokes are from the centre) diameter, also found on the manufacturer website, or the website of the store selling them and the flange spacings (how far the flanges are from the centre), again available off the websites. Bikehubstore will give you a good response if you ask them, I've just come back from a hard ride so not the most capable at the moment

The BikeHubStore site has the hub measurements

Front - PCD 39.6mm, center to flange (equal) 33.5mm
Rear - PCD DS 49.6mm NDS 38mm, center to flange DS 17.1mm NDS 37.3

Mavic Open Pro ERD is 602mm, but you may want to measure this yourself.

These are all the numbers you need to plug into a spoke calculator. You just need to decide on what cross, for 32H I'm guessing you would want 3x.

Might I suggest you check out the price of getting your wheels built at starbike in Germany.
From memory its 24.50 Euro for the build and postage is appeared to be 20 Euro last I looked which is cheap as chips
if its correct.
They were as cheap as anyone else appeared for their sapim cx-rays.
Where they fall down is their speed as the German mail takes on average about a month at least to get to you.
If you prefer speed, I bought my last wheels with cx-rays from wheelbuilder.com of whom I dealt with

Their prices are on their website but if your spokes are a standard length and dont need custom shortening (like mine did)
then they are US $3.15 each for cx-rays.
I used Velocity rims which were $65 each and supplied my own hubs.

The rim I already have as it was only the hub that was cooked not the rim
Thus is why it's getting built locally
