Looking to Buy new BB30 Chainset.. What BB do I have?

Hey guys,

I'm keen to grab a new FSA Crank set which is BB30 for my 2010 Ridley Noah Frame, I assumed it had BB30 but not sure.. Need some expertise before I buy an incompatible chainset , below is a photo of the BB outside....

I googled BC1.37x24 and got a little confused



Any advice would be great.

What you have is a bog stock standard threaded Shamino Hollowtech II BB.

BB30 is way too different with its different shell size and construction and oversize 30mm spindle compared to the 24mm unit in the HT II.

Time for a new bike?

bdopcycling sell a BSA to BB30 adapter. However the general consensus on another forum is that they will not work because the splindle on BB30 isn't long enough, "if the cranks are not true BB30 then they will work" - no idea what that means but it seems to suggest that some BB30 cranks will work.

That adaptor is if you have a BB30 frame and use it with Shimano cranks, not the other way around.

according to a thread on weightweenies it won't work unless its not a true BB30 crank (no idea what that means, just quoting)

From what I've read, BB30 has their bearings in the shell and the shell is 68mm, so BB30 cranks won't work for this adaptor as the spindle too short. The other designs which are designed for an 86mm shell width (or similar) are a similar width to external bearings and so the cranks for these should work. Strange then they should call the adaptor a BSA to BB30 when it is really a BSA to BB86.

That BSA to BB30 adaptor only has 2.4mm each side of the spindle for the bearing housing and the gap to clear the spindle (if I got the maths right). Seems like they've pushed the design to the limit. Interesting though. Thanks for posting.

no, because BB86 has a 24mm splindle. After a bit of reading myself, I'd say its a BSA to BB386 converter (the standard BH and Wilier use)

At least the future looks like it is going to get simpler from here as BB30 is likely to be phased out due to its frame width limitations and being the odd spindle length. So that should leave mainly BB69 and BB386 in the future, simplifying crank spindle length.

Although 30mm cranks might appear like the best way forward, the Shimano US rep in the past has cited durability problems with Al spindles. Also more bearing drag from bigger bearings can't be an improvement either.
