Anyone 95kgs+ ride 50mm carbon wheels??

Hi all,

Im 6'2&1/2" and around 95 kgs have been looking for a set of deep dishys and have found that some brands have a kg rating. mavic dont seem to have a rating.

Look forward to some feedback on this topic.

I think you'll find many people do as a carbon wheel that deep is very strong and (relatively) heavy.

The only thing you'll find is that the spoke count will be greater. E.g. a 95kg+ rider will ride a 24/28 spoke wheelset, whereas a lightweight rider may run 16/20 or similar.

I'm 95kg and ride FFWD F6Rs with 20/24. Been on them for about a year and have remained true throughout.

The Chinese manu's can do whatever drillings you like, in particular Farsports.
EDIT: I'll sound like a Farpsorts sales rep here but you can specify your hub and spokes as well, grab a 50/60/80mm rim laced up to some Alchemy hubs (which they can supply) and you have yourself a pretty good basis for a strong wheel.

If you want them for race use the Pro-Lite Vicenza is fine for your weight.

I was using a 20 spoke 60mm front for racing at 105Kg. No problems.

I also stole someones rear 24 spoke 50mm in the middle of a race after popping a spoke. Flexed like a bitch, I had to undo the rear brakes.

One of the A grade guys in our club, 85kg'ish bought a set of carbon wheels, rear split, the replacement rear split when being assembled by a guy who knows his stuff (ie., it wasn't overtensioned).

At 95kg YMMV. Depends if they been built light or strong.

Not quite at that weight but I am running Shimano Dura Ace C50 Tubualrs without any issues. There was a good group review a while ago in ride that tested a lot of the deep dish wheelsets and I paid particular attention to the stiffness ratings. These were the stiffest on test. I can still get some brake rub if I am going gangbusters in a sprint or being careless going uphill and grinding out of the saddle but that is my own fault. I have also used the Pro-Lite Gravia wheelset, which was stiffer again but heavier, good wheel on flatter courses as it maintains speed so well. Wouldn't want to push it up to many sustained or steep hills. Quality was excellent. Also used Mavic Cosmic Carbones which were simialr to the Pro-Lites, I would be very interested to try out a set of their Tubular wheels (ultimate I think).

My one recommendation is to buy something quality, I have used two sets of cheap Chinese wheels and found them lacking. I would prefer to buy someone's race wheels second hand for a little bit more than buy these new. I had both a 50mm and 30mm version, the ride quality and stiffness while ok is not a match for brand name wheels. I rebuilt the 50mm ones myself to get even and higher spoke tension but even then I did not particularly enjoy riding them, I sold them on not long after I got them.

My price range... That is where the problem is. Around $500 at the moment, so have been looking at the chinese and second hand range. Dont plan to put on the number untill next road season as i have only been back on the bike since easter after a 17 year break off the bike.

Why not go for alloy? Something like a H Plus Son Archetype or Velocity A23 laced to some wide BHS hubs (SLF71W & SL218) would fit your budget. Whatever option you go with, I'd be careful about your hub choice, Something like the Alchemy ORC & ELF would be great if you can afford it, they have good flange geometries so they will build up into a stiff wheel, something with poorly spaced low flanges will flex more

I broke a spoke on my wheel (32 spoke powertap), so I stole the rear wheel from my 'bitch' (because I was ahead on time. Plus he had to stop to attend the injured anyway... long story, but I popped a spoke when taking off again.)

At the $500 dollar price range look at second hand wheels and be patient. You can pick up some Mavic Cosmic Carbones, Reynolds Assault, maybe some older model Zipps. If you are willing to ride Tubular they often go for less money than the clincher variants. I picked up my Dura Ace wheels for $650 and the $150 extra is well worth it.

Your's and others experience may vary but at your weight I would recommend staying away from the Chinese wheelsets, I firmly believe they won't give you the ride you are looking for. You may be able to build up something using the Chinese rims with a nice wide flanged hub and quality spokes. Could be a good project?

Another question is what do you want to do with them? General riding, training, aero advantage, look cool, something different, see what the fuss is about?

Look Cool! That is my main reason + i am doing a bike leg of a tri after chrisse, then training all in that order.

Slight pulsing in the front wheel which was rectified by way of a bit of truing when first out of the box. Now run very smooth and very slippery in the wind. Just about got the cheapest ones I could find. Payed about $500 delivered. If these were to break on me or wear out or whatever, I’d buy them again, but probably with ceramic hubs and a better braking track. Most importantly, they look cool.

Bladex 250C via aliexpress. I'm pretty sure it's just farsports. As before, I'd upgrade to better hubs if I had my turn again.

They go great , no probs over the last 900km of use. My TWEs are sitting idle now, waiting for hill training

When you buy a new set, you might consider a higher spoke count build.

A better solution, and I'm not trying to troll or insult, lose 5kg and then buy wheels. That way you've got an incentive to drop the weight and won't need to be concerned you're going to bust a spoke.

Yeah will do. Probably shouldn't commute with them and just use the heavy duty alloys. But the carbons look sooooo cool.

Also I'm 22kgs down since I started riding. What's another 5kg? Should be doable.

Yes, I'm 102kgs and 6'4". Zipp 202 and 404's. a little over $500, but strong enough.
