Questions about purchasing bicycles and parts
by Wakatuki » Fri Jan 04, 2013 2:51 pm
Looking to step into my first road shoes, narrowed down to, Bont A3 with Buckle or A2, depending on the price of A2's. So Probably A3'! Any feedback on these? Based on the tech and the price I think they give Shimano 106's a good run for their money. Now I can pair these with either Look or Spd-sl as I need pedals too. Running Shimano 105 at the moment. Suggestions/ Thoughts? P.S. When purchased I'm off to the bike fitter!

I would stretch the budget and go to A1 or Vaypor if you can. Full monocoque carbon fibre body.

Check ebay as well, some good deals floating around Mind you ebay does seem to think bont is "boat"... Just make sure your 2nd toe ain't longer than your 1st you may run into sizing problems.

I commute in 3 strap A3's, all other times on buckle A1's, both picked up for a bargain. Can I feel the difference in stiffness, no not at all. Edit, don't get a full strap shoe either, you will never get them super tight.

Thanks for the tip.
Would CTT-3 or Vaypor be the weapon of choice?

You realise there is a $300 price difference here?

One is a resin and fiberglass sole and one is carbon fiber.

Quote from the road.cc review of the A3 which has a fiberglass sole. "The A-Threes feature among the stiffest soles out there even though it only made from lowly fibreglass. The support and stability the shoes provide when really cranking is also exemplary"

Watch out for size, just saying people have issues finding the right size. Myself I had to go up one size from Specialized when I purchased Bont A1s. Cheers, Peter

Did not realise it was $300 but eBay can sometimes close the gap considerably. Vaypor seem to be the "it" shoe because it has carbon. But can't find much on CTT in comparison.

I've been riding Bont A3s with three straps (no buckle) for a couple of years and have been very happy with them. I think the new version with the buckle would make them better but I've never really had a problem. The only issue with them has been cosmetic with some of the trim coming away from the glassfibre body and some damage to the fibreglass around the heel area - basically this collapsed so that it moves every time I put weight on it. This has no effect on riding though but I think if it gets much worse I'll have to replace them.
