Trek Madone 4.7 Ultegra v Scott Team CR1 105

OK, my first ever "vs" thread...

I have a mate keen to get into the scene and have taken him shopping over the weekend. Much like myself seven months ago, he is green as green can be, so I am imparting what little knowledge I have gained to help him make the right purchase. Unlike myself seven months ago, he is approaching in a very patient manner and has tried a couple of bikes this weekend.

First up was a Fuji Ultimira 105, which, even though it was the very first cab off the rank, didn't seem to impress him a whole lot. Didn't do much for me either, tbh. Then we went and saw my friends at an LBS near my work, where we took out a Scott CR1. I was very impressed with this one and so was my mate, very quick bike that had me pumping to keep up on my F2. Looks the goods too. For the sake of the exercise, we visited another store today, where we took out a Trek Madone 5.9 with Ultegra Di2. At $4500, it is out of ol' mate's budget, but they did have a 4.7 Ultegra mechanical there, which we didn't have time to test unfortunately. That particular bike is on sale at $2500, same as the Scott and right in the price bracket.

He seemed quite impressed with the 5.9 and may go back to try the 4.7 during the week, but at this stage, the Scott is still a little ways in front, despite seeming a little lower spec. On paper at least.

So, given the Madone is Ultegra, is it really that much more bike than the 105 CR1? Taking the "best bike is the one that feels right" out of the equation for a tick, I really want for him to make the best choice, based on longevity, overall quality of build and value for money.

Thoughts?

The frame, assuming for that price it's a 2012 model, is a number of levels up from the Scott.

The groupset is a serious step up from 105.

When I was looking 2012 4.5 was 105 groupset, 2012 4.7 was Ultegra, so I find it hard to believe 4.1 is suddenly Ultegra, you are probably talking 4.7. Anyway I got the 2012 5.2 Ultegra, and have 0 complaints after 2600 kms, but have no idea how a Scott would compare. If it's a 2013 model, sounds like a nice price, if it's 2012, I'd try to negotiate a little further, as I got the runout 5.2 well below that in Sydney.

Actually...I think you are right on that. It is a 4.7...

My bad

Heading adjusted accordingly.

Job's done.

Ended up with a 105 Foil 40. Very nice bike and my friends at the LBS (Cairns Bike Hub, on Mulgrave Rd, for anyone on the lookout) did a really awesome price, with shoes, pedals and computer all thrown in.

Incidentally, another very well known store, that has the Trek Madone 4.7 in stock, just missed a very easy sale, on account that they couldn't allow a test ride, as "the bike would be instantly second hand". Strictly speaking, that is probably true, but economically speaking, a really, really bad idea....

Still, mate is happy with the Scott and that really is the bottom line :)
