Brooks Flyer Special

Non of the Pommie sites seem to list it anymore - whats up with that?
Might they be out of production currently?
I put off buying one a few months ago due to being offered a B17 Special with the copper rivets and plated rails.
I went with it as it was a decent price and I could have it in my hot little hand on the day rather than waiting.
Now I'm ready to evaluate the Flyer Special, none of the regular sites are listing it.
Yes I know I can get one from the States or Ebay but I'd kinda gotten used to the less expensive buying from Evans, Wiggle and c r c.
Its got me curious as to why they are no longer listed.
Anyone know?
I've just sent off an email to c r c

Still listed on Brooks' own catalogue. You can even buy it direct from them.

Thanks IP :!:
After your last suggestion with regards looking for Tubus Cosmo on Bike24.com I decided to have a squiz.
Course it was after expressing my angst in this post.
Anyway, I shouldnt have been surprised to find that they have it on special:

I've gotta start remembering that its not just dynamo hubs and Rohloffs that Ze Germans can do a deal on. :D
I'm still curious as to why its no longer listed at c r c but thus far no answer awaiting me in my email this morning.

For almost exactly the same $$ you can get the Flyer Special from bike24.

Yes, but the shipping from bike24 is not usually fast or cheap.

Having worn my Aged Flyer out (nose assembly is now worn and twisting) I think most people may be better off with a B17 or Imperial due to less movement.

Correct.

However
1. Evans Cycles don't stock the Flyer Special
2. The price difference between the Flyer and the Flyer Special is about 30 Euro
3. bike24 will ship the Flyer Special to me for 79 Euro = 67 Pounds, just 9 Pounds more than the Evans price for the Flyer

All adds up to a better deal from my viewpoint. So it takes a week or two longer. Meh!

on the topic of brooks saddles, i'm looking at a team pro down the track.
there's the standard version and the special version.
i can see the aesthetic diferences, but what difference do the larger/smaller rivets make? does one perhaps last longer?

Larger rivets are hand-set - shaped to the leather's curves. They also distribute stresses over more of the leather and are supposed to reduce the tendency to crack around the rivets. However I have had cracks develop around the rivets on all of my saddles after time, with large, medium and small.

All except the Team Pro, which was a beast of a saddle and refused to break in for me. I am a light weight guy (60kg) but the Team Pro was ridden for >2000 kms and didn't budge. I retired it to my dual suspension MTB where at least the suspension gives some give. It's still hard as wood  I'd suggest the Team Pro for the heavier rider, or very high mileage use.

Finally priorities have been sorted and I was able to order amongst other items a black Flyer Special last night
from bike24. I'll then have a choice of three Brooks saddles to make an informed decision myself as to the comfort qualities/benefits of each situated in the riding position of the yet to be completed Surly Ogre. With what I imagine to be a more leaning forward position than I'm used to the Swift may come into its own. I certainly couldnt get used to it in the Moultons very upright riding position.
Currently I'm using a B17 Special on the Moulton which I'll also consider trying on the Ogre. Its not bad but certainly not as good as my flawed memory suggests my now sold B73 was. I have high hopes for the Flyer although I've already thoughts of some customisation. The black springs may have to be swapped out for some chrome ones available from Brooks (I think originally from a B67?).

The Flyer Special was 79,75 EUR or $98.78au

I also ordered a chain, stem and pedals and the total postage for the lot was 19.95 Eu or $24.71 Au.

That pic has a wickedly sexy seatpost ;)

Beware, the chrome springs will corrode eventually. Black ones do not.

Yes my B73 had some corrosion on the springs although I was living in NZ at the time so
hardly surprising with its usually large annual rainfall.
They've had their first decently dry summer in many years this year.
The farmers are whineing as usual but the locals cant believe their luck.
The average NZ summer made returning back home to Aus so much easier as a decision
although the eastern states have had some shocking rains lately.
I'm thinking some kiwis got some of their weather past customs somehow.

I'll keep your tip about the longevity of the finish of the black springs in mind when I make my
decision. Thanks for the reminder :)

Hi Nobody,

Ancient thread I know but if you still have your worn out saddle I believe all the parts for the nose assembly are available to buy. And it's not difficult to repair unless it involves rivets. The bolt is held in by the tension of the leather.
