Electronic Gears - worth the expense?

taking my full carbon DI2 bike to the LBS today to get a firmware update.. im almost as excited about the new features as what i was when i first got the bike..

I am thinking of getting a firmware upgrade for mine too. Just one question though. If you have multi-shift, how do you check for battery charge level as holding down the button for half a second would now be programmed to change multiple gears?

I really like the DI2 on my bike but understand it's not for everyone, so as to whether it's worth the money or not is up to each individual.

just hold the button for the front shifter or the rear shifter when it is at the end of its limits and it lights up as normal..

Single speed vs Multi-speed - Multi-speed, but "this goes up to 11" is getting ridiculous.
Campag vs Shimano - Don't care.
Steel vs Alloy - Depends if ride quality matters and how long it has to last.
Steel vs CF - Steel [Like no-one could see that one coming. ]
Alloy vs CF - Alloy. Still cheaper and more durable in general.
Ti vs all - Ti is a good material, just needs a good builder and is usually too expensive for most.

Now we have,
Mechanical derailleur vs Electronic derailleur - Mechanical, electronic is overkill and makes some act elitist, as does CF.
Campag EPS vs Shimano Di2 - EPS, on board diagnostics + manual positioning after fail does it for me.

What's new? Without these, there wouldn't be a cycling forum!!!

This arguement is the same as the clowns that still think steel bikes have any purpose in life other than land fill.

Steel bikes are hot and fills a good part of the market. They don't die. Similar, traditional mechanical derailleurs will also hang around for a good portion of the market. It's variety, not replacement.

Steel is so 1980's - Bamboo is where its at.

i'd hold off on the electronic gearing for another couple of years, until it is really taking over the market.

had a mate who had an s-works and was planning to do 3 peaks on it. but got there and the front derailuer cable and battery werent working. the bike mechanic didnt have the right tools to fix it. luckily they lent him a bike for the challenge.

electronic shifting is mostly better, just with a few drawbacks, such as availabilty and cost of parts. more things to replace if something goes wrong.

was it just the battery going flat? The system apparently stops the front derailleur working if the charge is very low.

yep i bet it was flat or the bike was leaning on something on the trip down and pressed the buttons which will send it flat quickly..

Sliced my right thumb open last thursday, I have 3 stiches in it, but due to their location I can not hold my bars and operate my mechanical gears without feeling like the wound is reopening, I'm hoping I can race tomorrow night with my Di2 due to having to move less to operate the gears.
