Upgrade crankset or wheels/cassette

The Glw has allowed the release of funds to upgrade some parts on the roadie.

I am looking for a higher top end and have the option of either a new standard crank to replace the current compact item or upgrade wheels to ksyrium equips with a new cassette.

I currently have a 12-25 cassette and after using gear calculators to find out 50x11 is roughly the same as 53x12 I am leaning toward wheels and cassette?

Thoughts?

Get better wheels/tyres and a 12-27 or 11-28 cassette and, hey presto, better bike all round.

Plus it's much simpler than swapping cranks...
...and you then have a spare pair of wheels.

You could grab a set of 'Semi-Compact' chainrings to go on your compact crankset?

52/36 and a 12-25 is something I'll be looking for come new bike time, perfect combo for me. Just can't bring myself to 'upgrade' to a compact crankset .

+1 for new wheels & tyres first for change in ride, feel quicker and faster

For more top end, new cassette, chain and chain rings, plenty of choices of rings for 110mm BCD 50, 52, 53 outer and match it to 34, 36 or 38 inner, next. So why not a 53/38 with a 11/28 cassette, best range just big jumps in ratios at bottom end.

New crankset last, unless you are flexing it under power (is your name Peter Sagan )
