Guidance on what Road Bike

Postby kunalraiker » Fri Mar 29, 2013 7:20 pm

All,

I'am loving this hobby, exercise is great :D

Looking to upgrade, and would be demo-ing bikes before purchase.
No Demo - No Bike

Although I'am open to purchasing online from overseas, but will try to test the bike here before buying.

Some of the things I'am keen to have in the new bike (used is also an option)

Should be Aero Frame
Should be Di2 Componentary
Should be decent weight, in the 7's with the pedals.

Optional
Nice to have cadence and speed sensors built in but not compulsory

I usually ride flat, hardly any hills, so a fast bike would be a preference as opposed to a climber.
I'am keen to get a good frame, the rest can be negotiated.

Budget - $6000.00 give or take

I won't be racing, but keen to have a bike that would last me a few years with decent specs and avoiding any upgradis atleast for a few years.

Happy to discuss and provide more details as we go along.

So Far on the list -

Scott Foil
Giant Propel
Neil Pyrde Alize
Cervelo S5 or earlier s models - DEMOed
Stevens SLR
Litespeed CR series
Canyon Aeroad
Boardman Air
BMC TMR01
Felt AR series
DeRosa Merak (slightly aero shaping)
Specialized Venge

hmmmm the new trek 5.9 its most if not all those categories. The new ones have the aero frame design with integrated brakes so it should be fairly aero. paired with some deepish wheels it would be pretty speedy. I am assuming it will be fairly light probably within what you will find acceptable. They are running ultegra di2 and have duotap integrated ANT+ speed and cadence. And comes in at $5000. Fits all of your criteria, now all you have to do is try one out :)

For that kind of budget you could build up whatever you wanted really (within reason of course), especially if you shopped around for bargains. For example you can buy Ultegra Di2 for 1500 online, buy some nice wheels and contact points and it still leaves you with a massive chunk of change for a frame.

Some bikes to check out in no particular order:

Scott Foil
Giant Propel
Neil Pyrde Alize
Cervelo S5 or earlier s models
Stevens SLR
Litespeed CR series
Canyon Aeroad
Boardman Air
BMC TRM01
Felt AR series
DeRosa Merak (slightly aero shaping)
Specialized Venge

Wow, I thought I was keen spending $1700 on a CAAD 10 after 6 months at it!

Good luck with the search and keep spinning those cranks mate.

cheers

Not really, this thread is about recommendations based on some requirements posted in the first post.

The Dream Bike thread was about what you guys want.

That is a valuable list, thanks.

Had a question on the venge, the S-WORKSversion is out of my budget but the standard is within budget.
What is the difference, is S-WORKS frame much different.

S-Works frame will be slightly lighter and stiffer than the standard model. Wether you can feel the difference or not, especially as it seems you have not been riding long, is another matter.

May I ask why you want an aero frame?

It's also important to keep in mind that not all aero frames will have the same design objectives, some are designed to be a 'aero' as possible at the detriment of stiffness. Some are brutal sprinters machines with a no compromise approach to comfort, others fall in between. What key criteria are you looking for in a frame? Ride quality, stiffness, handling, comfort? You can have a bike that is blisteringly fast in a straight line, on a flat road, but suck balls when it comes to the twisty stuff. So you need to identify where you will ride or want to ride and pick a frame that will suit the terrain and your riding style.

Also as another addition to the list check out a Ridley Noah and Kuota Kebel

Fixue, appreciate you're help so far.

I'am looking for a bike that sits at being very stiff and aero just so the bike has good power transmission and is great dealing with bad wind conditions.
Ride quality and Comfort are secondary, although a bike in my price range should have satisfy this.

It's important to keep in mind that aero bikes are not necessarily the best choice for windy conditions. In fact most of them are only beneficial at certain yaw angles and this obviously differs between the models. In gusty/windy conditions I can honestly say I would rather ride my non aero bike than my aero bike, especially if the ride could include a side wind.

If stiffness and aero are your key criteria than you need to get a hold of the tour magazine tests. That will give you an assessment of a frames stiffness to weight ratio and its aerodynamic numbers. Its not in your price range but the 'best' frame in the world at the moment is the Storck Aernario.

Good luck with the search

I know I'm biased but...

http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/bicycles ... /102209072

I've got the SST 2.0 and it's stiff and aero. The diff between the 1.0 and the 2.0 is the 1.0 uses a better grade of carbon

You are not biased, you like the bike and there is nothing wrong with that.

I cannot seem to edit the OP anymore.

Just an update guys,

I DEMOed the Specialized Venge today, Summarizing my ride, did't really fit me well.

I seemed to be stretching out a bit and felt as if I was sitting too low.
As for how the bike rode, well its kinda ok, nothing that stood out.

As most people have told me, the ride has to be comfortable and one should not feel the bike, well in this case I did feel the bike.

DEMO-ed a few more bikes today.

The Bianchi Infinito
Scott Foil 20
Scott Foil 15
Cannondale Supersix

Wow what can I say, had awesome fun riding them all.
It felt like a kid in a candy bar.

The Bianchi was the most fun out of all to ride, just enjoyed the relaxed geometry.
The Foil was aggressive and encouraging to push harder in order to go fast - loved this ride!
The Cannondale was the smoothest of all, but the geometry didn't suit me best.

so you are enjoying both relaxed and race geometry. are you making it harder for yourself by riding both types of geometry?

if you like both, aren't you better off looking at a Trek Madone. it's half way I believe
