Mate, we're obviously not going to convince you. To each his own and respect to you. All I can say to the OP or anyone interested in what gear to use is to spend 10 minutes at peak hour on a main bike commuter route into one of the capital cities and look at the proportion of urban commuters running panniers and dynohubs compared with those using backpacks and LED lights. It's not 1975 any more, technology has improved and people have voted with their dollars at the LBS or online.

Scirocco, if you're referring to the original poster, he specified rack and good lights - which would include dynamo ones. :)
