Questions about purchasing bicycles and parts
J-bend are cheap and easily found. Straight pull are often proprietary and therefore usually expensive and harder to find.
Straight pull hubs are more expensive as well (for the same quality).
The build can be more complicated (and take longer) to get right. Straight pull spokes are a little harder to get tension into, and the spokes can spin in the hub as the nipple is turned. The weight advantages are minimal.
The only functional benefit of straight pull (lessened stress on the spoke at the hub end) is more than negated by the compromises.
A well built J-bend wheel will have a service life just as long as a straight pull wheel.
Thanks for the reply guys. I've got one more question - one of the rims I've been looking at has an external rim size of 19mm. Would a 23mm tyre fit in fine? Would I need a 18-23mm tube or will a 23mm tube be fine?
Yes, no problem.
Either will fit.
