New parts/accs for New bike where online accs/parts

Postby superkermit » Mon Nov 11, 2013 6:01 pm

Hi all,

I have ordered my bike;

http://www.abcbikes.com.au/bikes-1/hard ... d-529.html

But want to purchase the following.

1. bar ends

2. shoes

3. pedals with clips for above shoes

4. a good lock for the city and uni - Kryptonite U lock, though not sure which one. Opinions?

5. skewers for front and rear wheels and seat post so they don't get stolen

6. city slick tyres - Schwalbe Big Apple Raceguard 29Er Tire or the Schwalbe Marathon 29Er Tire. Opinions please or better options.

From my understanding I could run 700 x 25c or 28c tires. Is this correct. My rims look to be 19mm wide?

7. slime tubes - thinking the slime brand

8. helicopter 3m tape - bought a roll of 10cm x 100cm clear. Is this enough for a bike?

9. Rear light. Currently I have a Niterider Solas 2 Watt USB Tail Light on my helmet.

I am thinking a rear Serfas Thunderbolt Tail Light too.

10. Front light. NO IDEA.

What parts would you suggest and should I shop online and ship from outside of Australia (if so where?)

Currently using jensenusa and CRC for pricing.

Thanks.

I assume the helicopter tape is for protecting the frame? The stuff they use on the leading edge of chopper rotors?

Not really necessary, although it will protect from minor dings. It looks crap though. Previous owner put it over the bonnet of my former car. Looked like someone got half way thru glad wrapping it.

Each to their own, however - if it's important to you, go for it.

As for the other items - look at Wiggle, Ribble, Chain Reaction Cycles or any of the other online bike shops in that box to the right. Or perhaps better still, given you're buying a fair few items - get the shop that sold you the bike to do a bundle deal for you. Except on the chopper tape.

Excellent and thank you.

Any opinions on specific parts and other bits I am looking at.

BTW - Who has free international shipping?

Wiggle and Ribble both have free shipping after a certain dollar price point. If you click on one of the links I referred to earlier, most of them trumpet their free shipping, etc on the main page. Then you get to play the fun game of 'which combination of goodies will be cheapest when I factor in shipping?'

Bubble wrap will do the same as the chopper tape, cost a lot less and only look twice as funny.

My opinions are mine - and you did ask on your original post...you don't have to agree with them.

Shoes with cleats - yes.
Pedals - yes.
Lock - yes. Look at Abus brand.
Slicks - yes. Will make commuting easier. No opinion on your choices - I don't know them.
Anti-theft skewers - depends where you will be parking, but better safe than sorry I guess.
Lights - yes. Many, many different options. Search for one of the many threads to see what everyone likes.
Slime Tubes - no idea what they are. Assume some sorts of anti-puncture tube. Generally heavier than regular tubes and I imagine more fiddly to change/repair. Just carry a spare and learn to change if need be.
Bar Ends - no opinion. I had them on my MTB 20 years ago...do people still use them?

Recommending particular brands will lead to exhaustive debate and discussion - best bet is to search thru the forum for topics on the particular item(s) as someone will undoubtedly have asked the question already. Better answers likely to be found in specific topics than a more broad one like this

FYI I was advised recently by my LBS to go the Schwalbe Marathons on my 29er for slicks but not to go under 32c because of my rim size on my Giant (but that might just be mine??). I went with 38's in the end because I wanted something fairly smooth.

2013 Giant Talon 0 29er

I like Big Apple tyres. One tube repair in 10000km not much tread left now. Slime tubes don't always work and the tubes don't patch. I wouldn't waste my money on them.

I like bar ends on narrow handle bars 580mm but do not like them on wider bars 640mm plus.

Shoes and pedals mountain bike ones. Either Time or Shimano SPD.
