New Aldi "Premium" Mountain Bike?

Postby Brotality » Mon Nov 11, 2013 7:32 pm

Hi guys,

Just saw this offer at Aldi https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys ... tain-bike/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and didn't think of anyone better to ask than you guys.

It certainly looks cool and cheap as hell. I'm guessing they are using the worst shifters available but is the frame worth anything?

I currently have a Giant Talon 2014 which cured my "upgrade-itis" for the time being, but I think I still have a mild case of "collection-itis"

I appreciate all opinions!
thanks guys!

Yes. Ring up a scrap metal merchant and ask what about 4kg of aluminum alloy is worth.

I tried to find that thread the other day. Some dude is scooting around my suburb on one of Jennay's race machines. Seen him quite a number of times in the last week, so I can only assume it hasn't disintegrated on him yet, despite the flash burns it clearly suffered.

haven't heard of that Jennay before.. Someone buys them, assemble them and resell them after a decent markup?

More like an indecent markup after removing the brand stickers. Also uses silly wording to make them sound better and lots of lens flare in the pics.

And it weighs only 18kg, as well.

How could an alloy frame MTB end up weighing 18kg, mine is only just over 11kg

Because everything else on that frame is made from crucible steel and barely reycled coke bottles.

I knew there was something my Scalpel 29r was missing. :(

A kickstand. You'd think after paying almost $(mumble mumble) they'd have at least given me that. I think I'm going to complain.

The Cruiser is better value, and lighter.

I'm sure there's a couple hiding deep in one of the gloomier recesses of my shed or cellar, free if you post a pic

I am quite intrigued to see the hydroformed aluminium tubing - looks like crappy supermarket bikes are moving forward to emulate more recent downtube MTB styling - perhaps the Y frames are no longer selling. Perhaps the premium is because it is a 'premium 18kgs'.

Do does it mean that their $12.99 helmets are to be avoided? They are AUS?NZ compliant

I think the repair stands have been discussed here before ($34.99)

I am a fan of Aldi, their recent TV ad is fanastic. I guess the thing about Aldi is you pick and chose, if you want a decent bike that you will actually ride, don't buy from a supermarket.

The workstand is pretty good for the coin - I'll probably still get something lighter/better for the car but may keep the aldi one for home.

Helmets look fine; if I hadn't just bought a Kali I'd've probably grabbed one as a "crashable" mtb helmet.
