Hi all,
I'm looking at a fast but durable disc bike to get to work and back and do the odd ride on the weekend when I have time to do a bit of training. I commute 56km per day in total, bit on the road but mostly cycle track and a few hops and drops to straighten up the track. Currently I’m riding a Scott speedster s30, great bike but I need it replaced. My budget is low, around the $1600 mark. I’ve been looking for weeks and have narrowed it down to the following, yes looks do count.
Cannondale synapse disc 105 - $1500

Giant anyroad 1 - 1600

Is there anything else you would recommend?
Cheers
J

I've heard the Trek Crossrip Ltd's are pretty good. There are too many unknows about the Giant Anyroad for me (give it a couple more years and I may change my mind. I'd lean toward the TCX for a Giant) and the Synapse is more a road bike (pretty good road bike though). Cheers!

If you're commuting and not much else, then yeah discs are nice as the pull up quick and true even in the wet. But if you're doing decent weekend rides, 40+kms, discs add weight and become a little tiresome.
+1 Giant TCX 1 would be a great choice, good gruppo for the $, nice and light canti brakes, a great CX bike and decent road bike for the weekend, and during the week a good bike to commute on (more relaxed geo than a roady, tougher build). I'm sure a second set of wheels so you can swap between thinner slick and thicker cx/tourer, would fit in your budget, $1300 for bike, $250 for spare set of wheels. Plus it's a nice looking bike.

If you've got a $10 head, get a $10 helmet

dippies, have you looked at CX bikes? There are plenty of advocates on the forums and while not the lightest bikes for weekends, they are the perfect commuter platform. Many are coming out with eyelets and attachment points in view of the adaptive nature for commuting. You could pick up a 2014 Merdia CX4 for $1600 now and I've seen my bike (2014 CX5 ultegra 11spd) for $1900.
I've got a few reviews on youtube as well.
