Smallest Ring 26T
Postby Toback » Thu Jan 29, 2015 11:59 am
Because I never use the smallest ring "26T" on my crankset. Can it be removed? if yes, is there any more parts I would need? I have at present shimano xt m771 48/36/26T crank and xt 771 front and back derailleurs plus shimano SLX HG80 9 sp cassette, and XT M770 9 speed F/B Trigger shifters. thankyou

If all you want to do is dispense with the small ring, you would just need to remove the ring, and then adjust the low gear limit screw on the front derailleur so it doesn't go further in than the 36t.

If you were worried about the extra unused shift point, you could replace the left shifter with a M780 unit, which is switchable between 2x & 3x settings. Simply shift to the middle position the turn the little switch on the underside of the shifter body to 2x & it locks out the granny position.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I ran an MTB triple shifter with two rings after I pulled the granny gear off. I set the low gear position (position one) to adjust to the middle ring, then when shifting to gear position two it would select the big ring and the hi limit screw stopped for selecting the third gear position. Doing this meant it also wouldn't undershift and have a slack gear cable when resting on the low limit screw.

I think if your not using the 26T ring then you need to find some steeper hills I'm about to go the other way and put a 26T on my CX bike.

OP lives in Seaford. Flat as a tack down that way so most of his local riding will lack any hills, and he'd have to ride a fair distance to find much that demands a granny gear.
