Hi,
Here's another bike buying advice post but I've been reading the forums for a while and run a number of searches which have been helpful, but still got a bunch of questions I'm hoping someone with a lot more knowledge than I can help with.
I am after a decent quality chromoly steel or aluminium (was leaning towards steel but starting to think it won't make much difference for my use?) frame that can support:
- a rear child seat
- a set of north road or swept back handle bars to give me a more upright comfortable position
- 700c, ~35mm tyres to absorb pot holes and give stability
- a 5-8 speed hub for easy maintenance
- option to add mud and chain guard for the wet weather!
- all under $1000 - or is this just going to cost more?
Is it possible to get a bike shop to build a custom bike to those specs, are there are any good custom bike shops left? I've read good things about Brown Jersey, not sure if they do custom builds though but I guess it's not too much different to their stock offerings. I read a lot of recommendations for Surly frames but they start close to $1000, are there good frames available for half that? Or is it just normal to go for something pre-built in this price range?
I've only managed to find these prebuilt options and read mixed things on all, though they are probably the best reviewed. Any of them good options?

Maybe talk to Lekker, see if they can do up an 8 speed for you?

Thanks - spoke to them and they can put a 7 speed nexus hub in any of their bikes for an extra $250.. not sure how good their bikes are but good to know that's an option.MattyK wrote:Maybe talk to Lekker, see if they can do up an 8 speed for you?

There's a review on this site. They seem pretty good.
