are SRAM cassettes any good?

Postby JV911 » Wed Oct 01, 2008 11:15 am

hi all,

looking at an SRAM 9 speed cassette to replace the tiagra-spec one on one of my bikes. aparently its shimano 105 equivalent with the added benefit of having a 26 tooth cog.

cost is $50 as opposed to ~ $100 for a shimano ultegra or $80 for a 105 (with 27 big ring in which case i think i'll need a new chain too)

so are SRAM cassettes any good?

any suggestions/alternatives greatly appreciated

cheers,

jeremy

Yep, they're perfectly good. I've used 12-23 and a 12-26 PG-970s a fair bit over the years, and have found them to be every bit as smooth as Ultegra.

I'm guessing you're looking at the PG-950? Still a good component, and good value. :)

Can't give an opinion as I have only had a roadie for the past 6 months/4500km and it has always had a SRAM PG-950 12-26 on it.

However, I recently replaced the original cassette (bike was bought second hand and it had done a few 1000 kms and the cassette was on it's second chain - which I also replaced) when I got my new wheels.

$50... Ebay is your friend.

I paid US$20.95 for a PG-950 12-26 cassette and US$21.95 for a PC-971 Chain (no PC-951 in stock) from http://stores.ebay.com/Bicycle-Supply.

Would have been about US$10 shipping if I had only bought the cassette and chain, but bought a load of other stuff as well. Shipping took ~7 days IIRC.

thanks simon

so i've done some poking around on ebay

there is bugger all difference in the price when buying locally v from the US when you take into a/c the currency conversion (would have been better a few weeks ago!) and the steep postage from the US (AT) US$20

chain and cassette combo: ~$80 for pg-950 v ~$100 for pg-970

Never used a SRAM road cassette but the mtb XT levels ones I have used have not been great...might give one of their road ones a try one day.

Never had any trouble with SRAM cassettes, haven't used anything else for years.

Till now.
Got an XT for the MTB and a Tiagra from PBK, couldn't find SRAM in my budget. Fingers crossed.
