That's not correct. For Shimano stuff, a 10 speed cassette will fit on a 8/9 speed hub if you install the spacer.

What wheels are you dealing with here, JV911? Unfortunately it's not a one-size-fits-all answer.

For Shimano cassettes, it works the other way... the spacer is used for putting a 10 speed cassette on an 8/9 speed hub. Shimano 10 speed cassettes are slightly narrower than 9 speed cassettes.

If the cassette body is 10 speed only (e.g. some of the new Dura Ace & Ultegra wheelsets), then you can't put a 9 speed cassette on.

Most wheelset out there are 8/9/10 compatible; a 9 speed cassette slides straight on, 10 speed works with a spacer.

sorry thats not right.
a 9 speed cassette will not go on a 10 speed only hub so depends what wheel you have.
A 9 speed cassette on a 9 speed hub does not require a spacer shim...but a 10 speed will go on a 9 speed hub but requires the spacer.
beat me to it.

ok now i'm confused :?:

just walked down to the LBS and they said it will fit no probs (didnt mention a spacer) but not vice versa as the cassettes are "stepped"

You need to specify the hub.
But...you probably have a 8/9/10 speed compatible hub if the lbs said that.In which case a 9 speed cassette will go on with no spacer.
The 10 speed cassette you take off will have a small shim spacer underneath it.

I don't know anything much about Felt TTR-3 wheels, but my gut feeling is that it will be fine. Not many aftermarket wheels are Shimano 10 only... most have Shimano 8/9 freehub bodies, and as we've said a 10 will fit with the spacer.

Can you remove the cassette? If it has a spacer, that's a definite sign that a 9 speed cassette will be fine.

Sounds like your LBS guy has things arse about...
