Custom build Santa Cruz Frame only or Full Bike

Postby jackthelad » Wed Jun 07, 2017 1:42 pm

i have bought second hand bikes and built from frames before
but what do you think i should be looking at full frame, with possibly dated parts, non boost forks and Hubs at the front or go from scratch, wheels and all, as the frame builds seem to be lower end wheels etc

I'd purchase the frame and then hunt around for bargain bits/secondhand or new. Wouldn't be concerned about the latest and greatest (Boost).

29er
my first foray into 29er
as the frame is also 27plus friendly as well
need to go boost as it will be new standard, moving forward

Isn't boost dependent on the frame? Like there's no point buying boost hubs if the frame isn't (and vice versa)

Boost is dependent on the frame manufacture..
And Fox and Rockshox, will only be doing boost forks from now..
Anything less than 142 rear thru axle, as a mountain bike frame, isnt being made anymore
148 is boost rear axle, and so i had to get boost front and rear custom wheel built , for a frame up build 32 spoke I9/Stans Flow Mk3 rims

I'm currently sourcing parts for a MTB build up of a Pinarello XC29er, probably have about 2/3rd's of the parts and will end up costing me less than a standard carbon hardtail with full XT, you just need to keep an eye out for bargains. I made a spreadsheet of all of the parts I need with the prices and have kept an eye out for when they are cheap. The frame is QR rear end, unlike the current model, but who cares, I've been riding QR rear ends forever and a 142mm rear end isn't going to drastically improve my life. NOS parts are your friend when building bikes, you don't always need the latest and greatest.
No New Years resolution, I'm perfect already.

The bike has been purchased using all new stock, custom picked and built at one of the LBS for Santa Cruz
bought as one purchase so that i have purchase and warranty back up, and i didn't have to do all the thinking ..
so going from there , Feels like a monster truck, and a beast to stop.. once it rolls, better to keep rolling
