Custom wheel build quote reasonable?

Postby scottyheist » Fri Sep 22, 2017 5:59 am

Went to Bike Now (South Melbourne) for a quote on a pair of wheels to be built. DT 450 hubs, Hed Belgium rim, DT Competition spokes. $1700 for the pair. Is this a reasonable price? I have no benchmark on price so hoping to get an independent quote. Thanks!

seems extreme for alloy rims, middling spokes and hubs. I'm not familiar with the 450 hubs but the higher the number the poorer the quality with DT normally. For that kind of cash you could get quality carbon so i'd say you're being played there

I recently had a long chat with Greg at TWE Wheels, his own business.
http://www.twebikewheels.com.au/index.html
He quoted me around $800.00 for a set of alloy rim racing wheels that weighed about 1250 grams.
These are very light, low profile rims designed for lighter riders. In my case 63kg's.
Greg is very informative and interested in his customers needs and makes recommendations accordingly. It was reports of his ability and product quality from forum members that steered me his way.
He is prepared to back these wheels for a distance of 35,000km's. ie. not free repair or part replacement but reasonable rates for repair with plenty of stock parts.
I was impressed by his enthusiasm and reviews of his wheels and will most likely make a purchase soon.
Alternately, we are lucky to have "Duck", a pro mechanic as a forum member.
He is located bayside in Melb and has built wheels for other forumites. His knowledge and skill level is awesome, has good taste in music (vitally important :D) and sounds like an honest operator.

Sounds extremely expensive. I built a set of wheels with HED Belgium Rims, DT240 hubs and DT Aerolite Bladed spokes. The cost of the parts was just over $1000, so that's a lot of margin in the build cost, especially given the cheaper hubs and spokes in your build.

For $1700 You can get full carbon!

I assume you meant DT 350 hubs? Just adding up part costs I get to around $600. Add labour and around $800 would see fair.

Agreed, but OP haven`t stated on what bike is it for. Might be for flat bar or roadie. And I think that he meant it for DT 240 hubs until he comes back for correction.

I won`t be paying them that kind of price.

Humm ...
$100 for a single custom wheel build with warranty ? Looks a bit light to me.

And then the shop may not be doing the build themselves so add something there ...

Pricing those components separately (I was a bit confused re the Hubs so used DT240 as a price point), this seems very expensive for that component mix.

Have you considered BikePro ?

I have a pair of their Aero38 wheels which I picked up as part of a bulk lot, and they are lovely wheels.
Mmm, SunTour
