They are shipping ...
As we mentioned two weeks ago, it’s been a particularly challenging month for us, but we’re excited to report that the first Karoos have left our manufacturing facility in China, and are currently on their way to some of our earliest customers!

I'm not someone who'll be ordering one, but there have been some interesting 'dodgy' practices done by the company for the Beta testers telling them how to respond to questions, promote the unit etc.

Just read the comments in DC Rainmaker (#252 & #271) for some enlightening correspondence. Another good example why steering clear and holding onto the money is sometimes a good idea.

It looks an interesting device. I hope early adopters don't have the same kind of experiences that I have had with various new devices.

I'll revisit after it has been in service for a while.

Interesting comments from DC. Seems it does a lot of things quite well, but then there are LOTS of things missing (imho).

Nothing out there is perfect though, so if it works for you, great.

I backed out and took the refund option last week. The amount of stuff missing from the DC youtube video was a little disheartening. Also, I needed some cash to buy some new wheels, and my Garmin 520 has been running just fine lately for mapping and directions (touch wood) so the whole thing really was going to be a luxury which I may not have actually used all that much.

I know it's never been stated but I had hoped that there would be the opportunity at some point to take advantage of the karoo's android environment. Deploying custom apps, or even just play store apps, would have made it potentially a very, very interesting device. Unfortunately, based on the rate of development just to get a fully featured bike computer deployed I'm not hopefully that it will ever be any more than just that.

Got it. First thing recommended to do is connect it to a net connection and download the latest firmware before bothering to do anything else. You may have sensor issues otherwise.
Bucketing down today so won't get it wet on its first day.

Annoyances so far...
-No auto-sync to Garmin, TP etc, just the usual Strava fluff. I assume this will come with time.
-Limited map selection size, can't select from Sunshine Coast to Brisbane to GC all in one map, you need to download multiple maps.

Edit: I should add a positive - the screens tactile touch is brilliant, even with the demo protection sheet on.

.....
The 1st one would be a no go (especially straight out of the box), is it really that hard to do uploads to multiple users ?

So, with the 2nd point, does that mean you can't have a single map (like download from Open street maps) ? The Wahoo bolt has maps from all over the world (routable and readable) pre-loaded.

2. At the moment you have to connect it to the net, go into the map settings, pinch and select an area then wait for it to download. You can do this for multiple areas. I'll be doing some big km's on foreign roads in a couple of months, this rules out taking it unless a firmware is released.
Currently no access to the internal storage, I downloaded a map all ready to load up, only to be shot down by lack of functionality :(

Loads of what the f**k questions on their new forums - https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/community/topics

TBF:

1) The Karoo is very much a beta device aimed at pre-order, kickstarter types. Anyone expecting any more than that is dreaming. It's a journey. I don't see them having a device on shelves in bike shops that you would actually want to use as a daily driver for a while.

2) The Garmin 510 was a terrible device when released to market - unusable ANT, terrible stability, no sync to strava despite and it was billed as a flagship, ready for market device. They've done similar with other devices, just raced them to market and caught up on the firmware later.

Garmin deserves to cop flack when they sell a device as market ready and it's not. Karoo deserves a bit of leeway because this is their first device and their open and transparent progress reporting has made it pretty obvious that users aren't going to get a finished, polished device when it arrives. Anyone who bought a Karoo with the expectation that it would be delivered on time and that it would be better than a 1030 the day it was delivered wasn't realistic with their expectations based on the information available.

Regardless, pretty happy with my choice to take a refund.

I'd argue against that. And it's not their 1st device.

Yep, kickstarter means lower expectations, but it shouldn't be that market un-ready.

I mean, no elevation recording ??????
