Custom build or factory build upgrade CX/gravel wheels?

Postby Ross » Tue Oct 03, 2017 8:01 pm

Along the lines of this recent thread viewtopic.php?f=9&t=95970 I would like to purchase some upgrade wheels for my CX/gravel bike.

Criteria is as follows:
700C (to suit up to 40mm tyre)
Shimano 11 speed comptatible
Centrelock 160mm disc brake compatible
QR
Tubeless not important but must be clincher
Preferred weight <1500g set
~24 spokes per wheel
Carbon or alu rim?
Prefer black rim with red hub
Rider weight 70kg
Budget ~$1000ish

Suggestions please...

Chain Reaction have a special price on Shimano RX830's.
$455.48 pair.
They're slightly heavier than your requirement but most of the weight is in the hub and disc.
These are very good wheels. Originally marketed for cyclocross, they are an aluminium/carbon laminate rim, similar to the Dura Ace and the RS80/81 road rims.
I've been riding on a pair of these for over two years now and paid nearly three times this price.
No problems whatsoever. I'd jump on this purchase if I needed new disc wheels.

Nah not worth it, barely any lighter than my current RX31 boat anchors.

Not sure where you'll find red Centrelock hubs.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Hunt wheels CX wheelset. 1585 grams (yes not under 1500 but pretty light for 27mm deep, 23mm wide rims). 24 spokes front and rear. Tyre width up to 40mm. $625.77.

Second that. I just ordered a set of their SupaDura Dynamo Disc Wheels for my new build. Very good value wheels.

I'd jump on LightBicycle.

Ask for some wheelbuild prices starting with a Bitex BX106 (qr/centrelock option) hubset in red (28hole).
Sapim CX-Ray spokes.
RM29C06 Flyweight rims.

Even using brass nipples you should get a pretty lightweight wheelset, under a grand using Bitex.
MUFC

Also check out Carbonal rims. I've built a couple of pairs of wheels on them, a MTB set with XTR hubs for myself and a 50mm-deep road set with Dura-Ace hubs, both with DT Aerolite spokes. Can't recall the weight of the road set, but my MTB pair is 1385g, with 32 spokes and brass nipples, and neither pair has needed any servicing. An extra feature of the Carbonals that I like is that they have titanium wires encased in the carbon layup in the beads and sidewalls, so that if you do crunch a rim they'll hold together and not completely blow apart. That spec cost about $1000 to build.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

@duck
Hope now do a 24 hole CL version in red
http://www.hopetech.com/product/rs4-cen ... front-hub/
http://www.hopetech.com/product/rs4-cen ... -rear-hub/
@ross
I have rear Pro 4 32 /6 bolt and f/r Pro 3 Mono Roads (rim) and run them in pretty hard dirt/ dust conditions but I think I am generally soft on most mech gear so have had have had no wear issues with them. Some peoples do seem to find the aluminium cassette body an issue. At 70 kgs you should be fine. Dont know about prices to oz but the ex factory hope hoops wheelsets on the hope www may suit your rim and spoke needs.
Ands ifs customs whys nos fancys fronts dynos hubs?
I matched up a blue hope rear with a sp front anno colour quite well....if building a new non racy type wheelset do it!!

No idea since I don't own them. They are Novatec hubs if that helps.
