Merida Scultura 400 vs 4000

Postby Tardvark » Sat Oct 28, 2017 7:28 pm

My old road bike has finally gotten to the point where I can no longer be bothered maintaining it. Going on 10 years now and I've really ridden the hell out of it. So I'm looking for a new road bike with 105 groupset. I came across Merida's which seem to come in quite budget friendly. Previously I've only ever owned Specialized, but I am pretty sure Merida manufacture at least some of Specialized frames, so why not have a look.

The Merida Scultura 400 caught my eye. It is at a good price point for an allow frame with 105 groupset, but then while talking to one of the guys at the shop he said he could do the Merida Scultura 4000 2017 model for a bit under $1500 to make way for 2018 stock. This seems very tempting for a full carbon frame bike with a 105 groupset. Anyone have any recommendations around the Scultura 400 and 4000? Are Merida worth looking at? I'll take them both for a test ride (I've only ever owned alloy bikes before, never even ridden a CF).

I've owned 2 Meridas in the past. Bikes were okay, but I moved them on because my needs changed.

If I recall correctly, you get a full 105 groupset on the 400/4000 (whereas the 500/5000 is partial ultegra with RS500 chainrings).

One thing I would raise is the recent warranty issue for a fork recall - believe they initially offered a full refund, then decided that people could wait months for a replacement fork and too bad for your safety.

Links of issues on Merida discussed on this forum - I'm sure you can find more on the interwebs.

well since merida own 49% of specialised, don't feel too bad going from a Sp to a merida. Theyre one of the biggest bicycle companies in the world

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I was having a look at the recall info. A bit alarming at how poorly they have handled it...

I have a Merida 5000 Disc, love it, great ride. The 400/4000 would be a solid ride also, sharing the same frame as the 5000 but just differing driveline spec. Would recommend, they are great bikes.

As for the fork, just make sure the fork is the new batch. The recall hasn't been that much of an issue for me as I work FIFO, time frame a bit long, but for me its being done and I'm looked after Ok by my LBS.
