Buying from Rose Bikes sans VAT
Postby Ross » Sun Nov 12, 2017 9:22 am
So I was looking for some new tyres and I found Rose Bikes in Germany appear to have what I want (Marathon Supreme - about $10ea cheaper than Wiggle, even after charging ~$25 freight) but the price includes VAT which I shouldn't have to pay but I can't see a way of having it removed. Maybe I need to actually create an account first, even though using cookies it recognises I'm from Australia?

I think you have to contact them to get the VAT refunded. Maybe someone else can confirm. I've only done a group purchase and wasn't the purchaser so 3rd party info

I've only used them once but had no issues with the VAT being removed either.MichaelB wrote:Can confirm that it works a treat. Have used Rose bikes several times

Rose were interested in Australia and the result woold have been an easier buying process but they never really committed.
They were doing fairly well for price / quality but don’t really have much velocity behind the brand and I wonder if the marketplace for them is changing.

They have been around for a while, but maybe the raid on Bike24 is a bit of a shakeup and something for them to work around ?
They have a fairly extensive range of in-house bikes, so is an interesting case.

I think I will end up buying these tyres from Bike24 after all because their shipping is a bit cheaper plus VAT gets taken off straight away when you add to baskest and identify country you are shipping to be Australia.

I know it's silly, but I wish I could see the price sans VAT, and preferably in AUD. One of my concerns around buying from the overseas retailers is the unknown extra potential costs of currency conversion etc.
Having to try and figure out what the costs would be using Google etc adds another barrier to purchasing. As does retaining VAT in the pricing.
