Popular online bike shops (Australia & International)

Postby AUbicycles » Fri Feb 16, 2018 6:41 pm

I want to put together some polls and collect stats on the current popular Australian and international online bike shops.

To kick this off - I want to collect the names of all of the shops that should be listed - aim to to concentrate on the big ones and filter out the small ones. It would be good if you can add to this list and to help keep it on track, you can add shops which you have actually purchase from in (let's say, the last 12 months).

You can also question a shop listed if you feel that it should be excluded. If someone has suggested a shop it only needs to be suggested once (no need for +1).

So - which online shops should be included?

I've only used Wiggle and Merlin, but both have been very good.

I've used Bike 24 quite often as they seem to have a great range of parts and decent prices.

Not used in the last 12 months but previous good experience with these two:

SJS Cycles

Spa Cycles

They have products and options other places don't offer.

*I forgot to add The Velodrome Shop - another niche online shop that I've used more recently.

What is the point of this? It looks like a hit list for Australian bicycle distributors.

For people like me who have always just gone to a shop, but now that I live regional and only have 1 sub standard shop, find this list extremely useful

I agree. If you can't find an online shop from the forums....

For me - I think you search for what you want and buy from whoever has it: say a Hope Lever Adaptor for Tech 3 Brake Levers with SRAM X7 / X9 / X0 / XX Trigger or a DT Swiss Centrelock adapter.
Ha ha ha! Cookies on dowels.

So let's make it easy for Australian distributors to target the overseas online stores they want their suppliers to enforce their exclusive distribution rights and prevent them from selling to Australia.

Many cycle shop owners are cyclists themselves as are their staff so most of those websites will already be well known within the industry. Take away the top 4 or 5 overseas retailers who are already well known and the remainder are just noise. It wouldn't be rocket science (if considered necessary) to access a UK/EU/USA cycle trade directory and very easily and quickly serve-up the unknown remainder of missing information. Its usefulness can be argued over but there shouldn't be anything else in the creation of this list to get upset over.

Chain reaction is usually my go-to. Merlin will have better prices sometimes though, all are great with their service.

The point of it is that I am collecting online retailers to make sure it is complete and want to then run a survey and share results.

Distributers in Australia can try and leverage the brands but it is hard as Australia is a small market... and any distributer who is taking any notice will already know or be able to make a list just a few minutes.

What is interesting is the amount of local online sales... this stuff usually goes through the distributers but is competitive for customers.
