How long do DA SPD-SL pedals last ?

Postby MichaelB » Sat May 26, 2018 5:57 pm

Just had a close look at my pedals, and it seems they have worn out. Not the bearings, but the platform on the pedal that locks in on the back edge of the cleat.

Still works, but it’s worn and has too much free play.

They are about 5 1/2 years old, so that’s pretty good service.

A new pair will be ordered shortly, but anyone else with a similar experience ?

Well, I finally got the pedals off last night (fitted some spare 105 alloy bodied SPD_SL's that I had lying around, as I can't decide what to get.

One thing my ferreting around did discover (although most probably already knew this), is that all of the SPD-SL pedals (well, from R550 & up) have bearings. Even the R550's . I thought only the DA's had bearings, and whilst that may have been the issue in the past, it isn't now.

Once I got the old DA's off, I had a chance to get a good look, and bugger me, no wonder the clip in was a bit sloppy !!! The pics aren't brilliant, but the wear can easily be seen !!

In both pics you can see the amount of wear from clipping in/out. I was quite surprised. Yet, the only really replaceable part designed to wear, only show some minor scratches ....
