new wheels $450.. worth it?

Postby newierider » Thu Oct 04, 2018 6:50 pm

hi guys, i have been running my current syncros rp1.5 wheels on my scott cr1 pro since early 2014.
they are a pretty lightweight wheel, about 1530g for the pair. 21mm depth.

i was thinking of getting the Fulcrum Racing Quattro LG wheelset, these are 1725g for the pair. 35mm depth.
the external width is around 2.1mm wider which will fit my 25mm tyres better. $450 is as much as i want to spend right now.

i am aware that aero capabilities dont really come into effect til im going around 35-40kph..
i am also aware that these stats are probably meaningless at this price range.. i just posted them to give you something to compare to.

my question is, is this type of wheel at this price range worth it? will i notice much difference? could it actually feel slower?

this bike is used for racing d grade, so averaging around 33-37kph flat.

I bought a pair of Fulrum Racing Quatro LG wheels about 18 months or so ago, for less than $350 at the time, I guess they've gone up. I found them to be great wheels, they have a comfortable ride but provide good power transfer and very well constructed. I don't remember mine being 1725g, I'm pretty sure mine weighed in lighter than the quoted weight. The 25mm tyres also fit on the wider rims better than my previous skinny ones. I don't race on my road bike so your needs may be different, you wouldn't need cutting edge equipment in D grade though.

Yes mate, get the Quattros, my son runs them on his race bike and he races A grade (at the pointy end too). Good wheels. Great value.

For $350 maybe but questionable at $450. I'd rather get a set of Zonda c17s.

Btw internal rim width is more important than external rim width

The Zonda's are $100 more and not quite as wide as the Quatro's, they are lighter though I'd say mainly because they they are a shallow rim. As far as I know Campagnolo and Fulcrum wheels all come out of the same factory, I'm sure either of these would be okay.

Great thanks guys! Think i will go ahead with the quattros.

Yeah it is strange, i did notice lots of people getting them at closer to $350-400.. even wiggle currently charge $440. Maybe they did it just to boost sales/reviews etc.

Oh, and im the pointy end of D grade.. ;)

Yeah both sets of wheels are great don't get me wrong but the Zondas I reckon are better all-rounders for less than $100.

Might be the $aud or time of year that they are that expensive on Wiggle at the moment but I'd shop around maybe even pickup a set secondhand. 12 months ago they were like nearly $100 less than that with the right coupon code.

Places like Merlin have taken over where Ribble (which use to be great) left off but I'm sure you get those Quattros cheaper with free delivery. Then again there is that gst on top of those prices now days. I forgot about that. Pushys or Bike bug might be worth checking to avoid that tax.

Quattros went up in price everywhere about a year ago.
Heavier than some, but only a bit, and more than compensated by extra depth. Aero works at (almost) any speed.

Kotavelo R42 is worth a look too.

The link that you have shown states they are 35mm depth, not 55mm as per your post.

Another point to note is that if you run a 25mm tyre on the front you will kill any aero benefits of the wheelset. A 25mm tyre on a 17c rim will be say 26mm or more wide, while the Fulcrum rim is 23.2mm wide.

i tried to get the price down at so many places, wiggle wouldnt go below 440, there was a place on bike exchange in melbourne that had them advertised at 350, i didnt get a reply from them and since found out the store had extremely bad reviews. they also shut down a while back.

in the end i went with bike bug at 450. unbelievably fast postage, i ordered at 4.30 and got them at 11am the next day!

saving ten dollars to have them shipped from the uk.. or even 50 dollars is not worth it to me.. not for wheels anyway, id rather have them shipped within australia and not slung around an airport and multiple handling stations.
