Full-finger summer roadie gloves?
Postby trailgumby » Thu Nov 22, 2018 10:34 pm
For MTB, it will likely remain my year-round fave. It fits my long skinny fingers perfectly and the no-padding palm is perfect for grip and control regardless of how wet and slimy the conditions, and how sweaty my hands.
Unfortunatley, with the amount of road riding I am now doing, riding on the hoods on the roadie rapidly wears out the inside side of the thumb against the rubber hood cover. The rest of the glove is fine and would likely last another few years.
Looking for something suitable for year-round use. What would you suggest?

I've just got a set of these in the last few weeks, I found that lumpy gel gloves were causing me grief with numb and cramping hands.trailgumby wrote:My favourite glove for over 10 years has been the Fox Sidewinder MTB glove. The problem is they are designed for flat handlebars, not the hoods on the roadie.

Not sure how warm I would wear them but I would think they could be used into the mid to high 20s.

Why would you want long fingered gloves on a roadie in summer?
Specialized Grail have been my favourites, I too hate lumpy gloves. They also come in a long finger version if you must, but I can't speak for fit/length.

Anyway, I’ve used these for cooler days in spring/autumn. They breathe well and last quite well.
They have versions with less ‘gel’ in them as well I think.

Bought for Melbourne winter and surprisingly good down to 0 for a few hrs for me. Had reason to have full protection during summer a few years back and bugger me they weren't bad. I was prepared to suffer but they breathed, I didn't sweat (inside them) and they didn't stick to my hands (they did my wrists when really hot and I was sweating down my arms a lot). My experience only
Weird as tan lines however

Long finger during summer for me as I don't like getting fried. I still put sunscreen on the back of the hands/fingers.

Not sure if the sarcasm font was missing or not, but having my fingers away from the brakes while riding in a close formation is not my idea of responsible bunch riding.Derny Driver wrote:I would suggest you don't ride on the hoodstrailgumby wrote: Unfortunatley, with the amount of road riding I am now doing, riding on the hoods .....

It's possible that DD was suggesting you ride in the dropstrailgumby wrote:Not sure if the sarcasm font was missing or not, but having my fingers away from the brakes while riding in a close formation is not my idea of responsible bunch riding.Derny Driver wrote:I would suggest you don't ride on the hoodstrailgumby wrote: Unfortunatley, with the amount of road riding I am now doing, riding on the hoods .....

Yes Bruce, following on from other posts about riding in the drops. I should have inserted a smiley face as my comment was not meant to be super serious.find_bruce wrote: It's possible that DD was suggesting you ride in the drops

during winter I throw a pair of icebreakers underneath.
Haven't managed to wear out any of the contact points yet, and they're comfortable enough on hot days.
Very cheap, so I have a few pairs in the rotation...

I don’t like short fingered gloves as they ride up and cut into the webbing between my fingers. My choice of glove is the long fingered Troy Lee Design’s XC. They are thin enough for summer heat but warm enough down to 5 degrees.

I get them slightly larger, so in winter I can slip a set of Merino baselayer gloves under them.
They are very light on the back (highly ventilated) the front is well padded AND they grip the bars and levers (this is the key requirement for me).

The older model has no padding just a synthetic leather(ish) material on the palm ... I ride a flat bar bike with bulky contoured grips and thought extra gel would be annoying and find these are excellent. Check out the new model ones maybe they may suit .... they also do a full fingered version of these.

2: Better grip on the levers in the rain and on hot days
3: Better crash protection. Don't want to be wiping my arse with skinned fingers. Is that too much information?

I tend to get lower back pain if I spend too much time in the drops. I'm fine so long as I don't mash too hard on the pedals. However I can go all day on the hoods.Derny Driver wrote:Yes Bruce, following on from other posts about riding in the drops. Super comfy, and even sorted out a long standing wrist issue for me.
