[HELP] Tubular Tyres Recommendation

Postby reeper250 » Sun May 05, 2013 7:37 pm

I need tyres for my carbon tubular wheels and was wanting to get some advice on which tyres to get.
Currently looking at getting either the Kenda Domestique ($41) or the Challenge Elite ($47)

Thanks

For low rolling resistance, reasonable puncture resistance and good price I'd recommend Vittoria Evo CX tyres.

If you look around (UK online) , these are available for around the price point you are looking at.

The lowest I can find the Vittoria Evo CX tyres for is $59 each

Planet X - http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/TBV ... ck___23_mm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you buy two tyres - over £60 so free shipping - £64.98 = `AU$99

No worries. :wink: Planet X have recently updated their postage costs to be far more reasonable than previously... So now worth checking as well as the usual UK shops.

Have been using Veloflex for years. Mileage; I get about 3k for a front one, and about 2k for a rear one. 160psi, had one blowout when I hit a large rock that had been thrown onto the road.

Never had a roll off. And remember the carbon specific glue.
Ha ha ha! Cookies on dowels.

Well, I ordered a pair of those Vittoria Corsa EVO CX from Planet X, hopefully they'll arrive soon. I am also most likely going to get some Continental Tubular Glue (for carbon rims)

I'd recommend the Vittoria Mastik 1 glue for either alloy or carbon, and in tubes, not a tub - much easier / neater to apply from tubes............

Yeah I find the Vittoria Mastik easier to use than the Continental and cheaper too.

I like the Continental Sprinter tyres http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-t ... onttuba260" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But it depends on what you are using them for.

I only use them for races

the problem i find with Vittoria Corsa EVO CX tubs is when you rip them off a wheel the casing tears.

You mean the base tape?

How old were the CX hoops?

The result of lots of glass and lose stones around my area on a rear Maxxis Re Fuse tyre. No other dramas but expected they would last longer than they have. Maybe 2.5K

Tyres are running VERY well so far although the air seems to escape from them if I don't ride it for a day?

That's normal. Tubulars don't hold their pressure. They have latex inner tubes and the air escapes through the latex.

These ones have normal rubber inner tube so don't lose air

I didn't know that there was a tubular version of a Re-Fuse. :?:

Butyl tubes still lose air, just not as fast. One of those bizarre bicycle facts, the best tubes don't hold air very well. However the sensitive types will tell you that they can feel the better rolling behaviour of latex tubes. If the reason you went for tubulars was for performance in the first place then there is no sense handing some of it back for the sake of mere convenience. (Just like if I used tubulars on my track bike they'd be held on with shellac or some other hard glue, Mastik One is only for road tyres IMO.)

Cheers,

Cameron

I can't tell any difference by riding between Evo CX and Triathlon tubs. I currently have one of each on my bike. I prefer the Triathlon one as it's generally one less thing (pumping tyres up) I need to do before a race. Especially handy on my TT bike with disc wheel where it takes two people to pump it up and a second person isn't always available.

You're clearly insensitive. :D

I wouldn't rely on me picking the difference in a blind test either. :oops:

Others say the difference is night and day....

Cameron
