Skewer/Dropout Question

Postby mattwilkinson » Sun Aug 11, 2013 7:22 pm

Probably a massively noob questions

I am looking at getting some UST wheels for my Giant Anthem X2 2012.
Basically I understand I need a 15mm front wheel, Or one that can be converted to 15mm.

But I'm unsure of my rear wheels skewer. Is it 9mm? is it 12mm?

Will my frame only fit the specific skewer size, or are rear dropouts compatible with all skewer sizes?

Your rear is a 135x10mm quick release.

Aside from a conventional Q/R, the only axle format that will fit is a 10mm bolt-up.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

thanks for that, So when buying rear wheels is there anything I need to look out for?
Does it have to be a 10mm skewer? Are they all generally this size?

Standard MTB rear end Matt, if an ad doesn't mention a different type then that's what it'll be.

The axle is 10mm. The skewer is considerably thinner, 'cos it goes through the guts of the axle.

Unless it mentions the alternate 142x12 Syntace standard it will be 135×10 QR.

Correct...though Giant have now changed all their Anthem/XTC range across to the 142x12 'standard' in the rear end for 2014.
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

Not exactly correct. The new 27.5" frames are convertible, but the 29er frames, which are all carried over from last year remaim exclusively 135x10.
