Nope your going to need a spanner or I hate to shake your hand......
You will need a chain whip as well that suits your cassette something like below.

So I could just use a claw hammer and chain to do the same as this?

Is possible without chain whip, just harder. I've used a rag wrapped around the cassette a couple of times. If you dont want to shell out for a chain whip they aren't hard to make. A bit of flat bar, a drill, some chain and a chain breaker. Copy the design from a pic on the net. Mine is home made a works fine, but would be nicer with an 'ergonomic' grip, rather than a thin flat piece of steel.

It's worth just shelling out for a cheap tool kit such as - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321131130118 ... 1131130118" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Then you can change cassette's, chains, cranks etc easily at home and keep your bike in good shape without forking out for a bike shop to do it. Yeah it's a cheap tool kit, and yeah the bike shops might not be happy that I'm not giving them business, but hey, I'm a tightass and I'm not going to throw money away for no reason

BTW Foo, the tool you linked, has a 32mm head.
This is the same size as old style headset spanners which you might have. It is a bit bigger than the standard 12" shifter can handle from memory.
Cheers,
Cameron

Almost. A 12" shifter will open to 35mm, which is fine for a 1" threaded headset, which has 32mm nuts (but you still need a headset spanner for the lower one).ironhanglider wrote:BTW Foo, the tool you linked, has a 32mm head.

1 1/8" threaded headsets have 36mm nuts, which obviously the shifter won't quite open enough for.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
