Upgrade to 105

Postby rp » Wed Aug 14, 2013 12:14 am

Hi guys,

I would like to upgrade my bike with Sora components to 105 groupset (out of necessity rather than choice - the Sora components are rusting/wearing out). I haven't been able to find whole groupsets available online - wiggle and Chainreactioncycles sell individually. Where could I get the parts I need for the best price?

Cheers for the help!

Ribble or Merlin

you may well be happy with Tiagra for 25% less than 105

I'd pick Tiagra shifters over 105 quite frankly. The current 4600 levers are essentially 7800-series Dura-Ace guts with a bit of cosmetic tweaking. Those levers are the best things built prior to the new 11-sp. stuff. The rest of the 105 group is a cut above Tiagra, but I'd take the "cheaper" shifters any day.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Tried both the Tiagra 4600 and 105 5700 on my commuter.

Both work great :)

The whole tiagra 10 speed group works well - the only thing I'd recommend is going for a 105 5700 cassette as the finish quality of the tiagra cassettes 'look' to be inferior in their machining (appears to be the bare minimum) and I percieved this would affect shifting performance. The shifters and derailleurs for Tiagra though are solid for the money ,and the other parts (brakes, cranks) - also capably up to the task.

Thanks for the responses so far. The main reason for the upgrade is that some of the Sora stuff made is made from steel and is rusting. I'm told from 105 up they are alloy and will last much longer. I do ride in the wet if it is raining for the commute to work.
It seems close to $500 to upgrade to 105 through c r c - not too bad, but any higher and I'd be looking at new bikes.

Even Sora is predominantly alloy; the only steel parts are small bits such as brake caliper springs, cable clamp bolts & washers and the front derailleur cage. You'll find these same parts on better groups are also steel.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Basically, it looks and works great, no reliability issues or problems to speak of. Available in several very cool colours. Its 10sp and you can mix the parts with Shimano components if you like (they use the same cable pull ratio).

The gear cables are not internal (same as shimano 7800 for instance), the benefit in this is you get lighter shifting and you can replace the gear cables without having to re-tape your bars. The only downside is it doesn't look quite as neat but that is usually forgotten after the first ride.

They come with high quality cables included.

They supply a 3pc set so you can get the levers, front and rear mech.

The items they don't sell are chain, brakes, crankset, bottom bracket & cassette. For those items, anything that is 10sp Sram or Shimano compatible will work perfectly.

The killer feature though is that on top of working great, being light, looking good - the price is amazing.

Merlincycles, more often than not one of the best prices for the whole 105 groupset :)

I think its $530 delivered - and having used them, I find them to be pretty good!

Microshift - very interesting. I think for now, I have been swayed into buying a Fixie from cellbikes (though I'll take a look at the BigW one with the other bloke saying it's pretty good). I will then upgrade the components I need as they break/die...

Cheers!

I think you are missing the point, you should be comparing Microshift White to Dura-Ace since that is the level of weight/performance. When you do this, there is no comparison. You can get the 3pc set for probably less than the price of one Dura-Ace shifter.

I'm not mate :)

OP Asked: I would like to upgrade my bike with Sora components to 105 groupset. I haven't been able to find whole groupsets available online - wiggle and Chainreactioncycles sell individually. Where could I get the parts I need for the best price?

So I gave him an answer?

All the same, given that white group you are suggesting is 3 x 10 speed components for $300 when the OP would then also have to upgrade his Sora 9 speed (possibly 8 speed) components - namely cassette, crank & chain for extra. Can it be done NEW for $200 to bring him under $500 - yes but not with anything exceptional - Tiagra maybe - certainly nothing Dura-ace like in quality?

With some clever shopping I think he could come pretty close to doing Microshift for the price of 105, especially given some components he has maybe re-useable like brakes? Maybe chainset?

Yeah I'm coming from 9 speed Sora components. I think I'll get a fixie then I'll have a backup bike for when my components fail.

What's the Mavic CXP22 wheel like? I'm looking at buying these as an upgrade to my stock standard alexrims that came with my bike (stainless spokes etc)

Microshift / Nashbar branded 9 speed:

Shifters: $139 http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10 ... 1___202436" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Front D: $21 braze on http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10 ... 1___202434" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
or clamp on $29 http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10 ... 1___202434" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Rear D: $35 http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10 ... 1___202434" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

~$200+/-, plus some shipping, and minus one of their frequent sale discounts.

A new groupset.
labour cost to install or full DIY or part DIY +$?
New wheels.

It might be cheaper to buy a new bike.

Reid Falco is about ~750ish with full 105. Certainly a lot better than trying to upgrade Sora to 105. I'd have to agree.

Just had a look at the Microshift Arsis, thanks Deon. Pretty impressive. Only downfall looks like the noise and FD throw (amazingly long). I don't consider the routing an issue. Wouldn't be too hard to put together a totally race-worthy bike for about ~$1400ish dollars as the grouppo/drivetrain is usually where a lot of moola is spent on custom buidget builds :mrgreen:

Cable pull ratio is identical to Shimano.

I have some more Arsis coming, they are only a little more expensive than the "White"

Depends what hubs & spokes they're built onto; CXP22 is only the model of the rim. That said, it is a bit nicer than the Alex (I'll take a stab at DA22?)
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
