Bike Maintenance books

Postby TREKKER_MIKE » Sun Aug 18, 2013 4:16 am

Hi All,

Does anyone have a bike maintenance book that they could recommend.

I don't mind putting the bike in the shop, but it would be good to be able to DIY on my bikes and the kids bikes to keep them in top working order.

A friends father had a really old Bianchi (in purple) and that was like brand new because he was always looking after it with proper maintenance.

I have always liked the"dummies" books, but thought i would ask here.

Or

Does someone recommend a course

These are the two I was going to say. These and the interwebs, as well as actually doing stuff is how I've learnt.

I know you asked for books, but the Bike Repair app (on apple and android) is a great tool. I was recently put onto it and find it great - very simple instructions on a lot repair and maintenance topics. Instructions are straight forward with clear pics. I have Zinns book, but now use the Bike Repair app as it is much simpler with easier to follow instructions - all for $2.99 (it's the only app i've ever paid for!)

I've got "Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance", but I also tend to use the Park Tools maintenance guides online, and refer to videos occasionally. Another great source of maintenance tips is of course these and other fora (e.g. the BNV fora, although it's not exactly "BNV" anymore, they're having an identity crisis, again).

Another vote for these. You can sometimes encounter them in bike shops.

Probably best to change your LBS if their copies have a suspiciously large number of greasy fingerprints on them.

I started with Sheldonbrown.com. A wealth of info, once you know all the parts it's not hard to find YouTube clips tht suit what you want.

On another note, what are these things called "books" you refer to? Are they an early beta of the Internet?

As well as the Zinn books (I have the mountain bike version) I thoroughly recommend this one...

if only for its many pics and clarity of description...and at $25 a bargain

I still like books and Maps.

I am from the era of PC's, but technology will fail and let you down. A book wont

Books, i can repair something outside, and not have to have my laptop around all the grease and tools

Maps - GPS can send you down one way streets, no right turns etc, or send you on a route that is slower, i like to open the book, use my map reading skills.

You see people at night blinded on the road with the GPS in their face. How can you see the road i ask :)
