It'll fit. Spindle diameter & spline haven't changed since the two-piece setup appeared on 7800 D-A.

Then again... if you wanted to get a new crank now and move to 11 speed by Christmas, that might not be a bad idea.
They said the same thing ten years ago when 10-speed was The New Thing, and it quickly became apparent that there's more compatibilty than Shimano would like us to believe. Heck, they're even marketing certain stuff as 9/10-sp. compatible. Sure there's some bits that are specific, but cranks tend to not be too fussy.
I fitted a 6650 Ultegra Compact to a customer's 9000-specced bike for a trip to France a few weeks ago (due to unavailability of compact rings for the 9000 crank). She brought the bike back in today to have the crank swapped back, and I asked her if the 10-sp crank had any effect with the 11-sp. chain. She said it worked perfectly the entire time.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Ok smartypants; will there be a significant stiffness difference between the arms? (I assume it wouldn't be too different?)

Cmon I'm serious, 105 arm is calliiiiiinnnnnnngggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

Not that the average human could detect. There is a small weight increase with each step down the ranks though, as the hole up the guts gets smaller (105 & better have hollow arms, Tiagra & below are solid). There would be vastly more flex in your frame.

Grand sexy time! I've got to shuffle the deck chairs but its time for power. 105 crankarm in black doesn't have to match perfectly. The price is right at 700 us bucks.

Haven't fitted my groupset yet (waiting for i-link cables to arrive) but I did check the crank compatibility with a 6700 set I had lying around. No probs using a 6700 left arm on the 6800 right arm/rings.

So I ended up with a Trek 2013 Madone frame which meant I need to get some dual post brakes to fit the frame. Ordered some Ultegra 6810 aero brakes which arrived today. Planning on the full 6800 build this weekend now I have the brakes.

Some slightly used 6800 brakes going in the market place ;)

Didn't realise they had the aero brakes available yet? I'm not unhappy with my Bontrager stock brakes... good on you for getting a real bike ;)

not many shops stocking them yet. Found some at http://www.westbrookcycles.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; though and they were pretty well priced.

Aero brakes... I feel an upgrade coming on....

What forks do they fit?

Trek Madone 2013+ for one. I'm guessing most of the TT bikes and "aero" road bikes too. They sit flat against the fork, I'm not sure if they work with standard forks?

They need dual brake post mounts for a start.

They'll only work on specifically-designed frames & forks. They won't work with ones designed for v-brake style aero brakes, because the mounts are in a different location.

So my Domane came with mostly 6700 Ultegra but the cranks are non-series. I'm thinking about upgrading them to Ultegra and it seems logical (to me at least :D ) that if I do that I may as well go for the latest 6800 variant. I know these are aimed at 11 speed but is there any reason they won't work with 6700 shifters?

I've tried trawling google but I can't seem to come up with anything so hoping the combined wisdom on here can guide me.

cheers, Andy

6700 shifters won't work with the 6800 deraillers (well, at least the rear one won't)

you'll also have to check that your wheel hub is capable of holding an 11 speed cassette (they are wider)
re your crank - you'll have to check your bottom bracket/frame are capable of running a 24mm spindle BB that is the correct width for the shimano cranks

Did you even read the question?

There is no problem mixing the 6800 crank with a different series of shifters/derailleurs/etc.

the upgrading them to me he's going to be upgrading more than 1 component

Sorry, my bad. I used cranks as in plural of crank. In my mind a bike has two cranks if the definition of a crank is "an arm attached at right angles to a rotating shaft" there's one on each side. I should more correctly have used crankset, then I could have used "upgrade it". Won't do it again, honest :D and thanks for trying to help.

Andy, definitely get yourself 6800 cranks if you are upgrading. Make sure you get the standard cranks because I'm sure it is cheaper to pick up second hand compact chainrings for the 6800/9000 cranks, and you can swap them as needed. Even better to go TT chainrings LOL :)

Well it may be a little while yet before secondhand rings start appearing, but the beauty of the 9000/6800 design is that the same crank spider will accept all ring sizes, so you don't need to change the whole crank if you wish to swap from standard to compact or vice-versa. :)

Yet to see any Ultegra chainrings actually on the market. Will be interesting to see what they cost when they become available. I went the compact route but wouldn't mind a pair of standard rings for the month or two of the year (summer) when I only ride flat courses.
