DD (Marcus)
Thanks for the rundown, you sure must enjoy the family connection.
On the photo?
Im also not sure why De Vlaeminck is wearing the Belgian champions jersey on the track since he never won a national title until the madison in 1972.
Got a idea, the shot is Ghent.
Having been in Ghent, just after that period and found the Belgium people were Cycling-crazy
(as you would be having all the Nationalistic Champions) and Cyclists were "gods"
At that period, the officials would not be that "pedantic" as they are today about jersey wear,
and since De Vlaeminck was "National Road Champion" in 1969,
he was probably "Nationalisticly" promoted as such, at the 6-Day.
I was lucky enough to be around most of the Aussies there in the Seventies (Racing and Training)
... as Ghent was a base.
Ghent was such a "primitive" Village, at the times, with it's "soul" based well and truelly in Cycling.
It was like being at a "carnival" every day, though things were very tuff for all,
as most would attest to, who were around in those days. Brings a smile, to think back on it.
Thanks for you rundown, about your experiences.
Cheers

Van Looy and Peter Post
Image
Van Looy was known more as a roadman, first man to win all 5 one day classic road 'monuments' (along with De Vlaeminck and Merckx) as well as being twice champion of the world on the road. Those quads gave him a killer sprint and he used it to smash his road racing rivals.
But less well known is his track racing prowess - he did ride the track a bit where his endurance and sprint came in handy. He won the Brussells SixDay in 1957 with fellow Belgian roadman Willy Vannitsen, then the Gent sixday in 1958 with my uncle. Then followed about 10 or so six day victories with Peter Post pictured here. My uncle has a photo taken by a track photo finish camera, of him beating Van Looy in a track sprint. He always smiles when he looks at that one.

Peter Post was a good roadman but an amazing track cyclist. 65 sixday wins and from memory, 8 or 9 consecutive European derny championships between 1960 and 1970. He was a good pursuiter too.

My uncle had numerous battles with team Van-Looy-Post, a formidable combination! In the Milan sixday of 1961 with Terruzzi my uncle just pipped them for the victory, a car and a million lira. And in my uncles very last race as a professional, he teamed with the brilliant Peter Post at Antwerp and was able to pull off a second place at age 38.

Van Looy-Post. One of the great track teams of the 1960s.

Commuting tonight I bumped into a guy commuting who was heading for Paramatta, probably from the CBD. Had a world masters bag and we started chatting. He is 65 and a former national track champion, back in the day. Use to race Kieth Oliver.

Now for the life of me, I've forgotten his name. Hit me with some names

Dave Wilmott ? He is a world masters champion, about that age, lives in Sydney.
EDIT actually I think Dave is not 65 yet. What about Jim Veal, Ron Boyle, John Hunt, Ron Hickson, Jim Larcombe, Terry Skinner, Ross Hodgson, Darrell Wheeler, Trevor Rollinson, Greg Barnes ...

I think Mike would know Dave Wilmott, since he's a RAW regular. Jimmy Veal, I think, is still in a neck brace after face planting at RAW in about week 4 or 5. If it was him, it would be good to know he's back on the bike.

Yes my dad knows of him, apparently he owned a couple of bike shops in the Blacktown area back in the day. But no relation to Don Blackman of Blackbird bikes Ashfield.

If you mean Ron HicKson, formerly of Ipswich, I used to race against his son John when we were juniors. I saw him (Ron, that is) at a track carnival at Chandler late last year, racing for the Rockhampton club. I believe they moved to Rocky when John started University up there.

The Silver Fox is still racing here in Rocky. I had a match sprint with him and another bloke and after he beat us by half a wheel he was good enough to spend some time with us afterwards giving us some pointers. You can't bottle what Ron knows and being only my second season, I was all ears. He's a damn fine gentleman and i hope to be racing him this coming season.

Cheers

And the stem is way wrong too. I reckon it's because of the SMP seat style. I have a BIG seat to bar drop and tried an SMP I had around. It was really uncomfortable when there was heaps of bar drop. I love my SMP on my roadie though.

The upswept bit in front of where you sit doesn't work for big bar drop and I think this is what that rider is trying to combat with that setup...... either that or they are just plain weird. Any commisaire looking at that would send them packing too!
