OK, so you didn't bite at my previous comment.... :P

You realise chucking a 9070 RD into a 6770 setup will only test one of the disputed points, that being if 10 & 11-sp F&RDs will actually talk to each other? 'Cos you're proposing to test it in a 10-sp. system, you're not adjusting the chainline as an 11-sp. will do, so it won't test the disputed trim difference.

What you need to do to test it all properly is chuck a 6770 FD into a 9070 system. I'm quite keen to test it out myself if I get a chance at work, I've got everything I need to try it.....
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Who cares if a 6770 fd will work with in a 9070 groupset.. No one is going to change out there fd for something to do..

All I want to test if a 11 speed rear will work 100% in a 10 speed setup and make sure my sprint buttons keep working etc.

Then ill buy 2 rear mechs, 2 chains and 3 cassettes and ill be 11 speed on both my bikes..

Stop being such a knob & have a think why I suggested doing it that way (obviously you need to borrow someone's 9070 setup to do it). It's known that the shifters are the "lazy" part of the system, therefore it doesn't matter which ones are used. In order to test the second disputed point, that being the trim calibration for the wider 11-sp. cassette, one must test the "10-sp." FD on an 11-sp. wheel/cassette. Simply throwing an 11-sp. RD into a 10-sp. system, unless you also change the wheel (which you haven't mentioned doing as part of the communication-testing process) will not put that side of things to test.

are you serious?

how the hell are you going to test a 11 speed rear mech with a 10 speed cassette? are you that stupid that I have to spell it out point by point for you to understand? it seems everyone is on the same page but the pro bike mechanic just misses the plot all together..

FWIW I have already ordered 2 6870 rear mechs, 2 chains and 3 cassettes for my 2 bikes and 3 sets of wheels because I already know it works and works perfectly but I didn't take any photos to prove it to knobs like you.. If you had done your research on me you would already know that I have cracked the shimano DI2 protocol and am able to replicate it and don't even require shifters etc to make the system work properly so I dare say I have a little more knowledge on how the DI2 system works than you do..

lucky for me ive already converted 10 speed wheels to 11 speed with out changing free hubs. lucky shimano and zipp said it cant be done and you need to buy new hubs etc to do it.. no you don't, you just have to not be a bike mechanic to do it and actually have some brains in your head..

shimano 10 speed hub.. count how many cogs are on there..

Not that I have access to a lathe, but have you machined the 10 speed freehub to now fit 11 sp?
If so it's nice to see someone circumvent to the planned obsolesence built in by shimano 8) :D

yes you have to machine both the free hub and the cassette, but you have to do it in such a way that the cassette is not wreaked and cant be used on another wheel.. so its not just a matter of machining the back of the cassette..

Dale,

Out of interest are any of the parts that make up the 6800 cassette carbon?

Cheers

no, not unless they are using a carbon filled plastic on the second cluster stack

Looks like it but it will probably be some special resin stuff

FWIW, I'm interested in both tests. Although I'm not too concerned about the front trim issue I am interested in knowing if it will provide full functionality or will be impaired by the 11/10sp combo.

Having now noted that 6870 is only a few months away I'm probably just going to wait until then anyway so it's a bit of a moot point for me now as I don't already own 6770.
