I wouldn't imagine Fab's touring road bike is any different than his team mates bikes.
He's not a sprinter so there's no advantage stiffening his fork and/or cockpit and UCI doesn't allow custom road frames.

That being said, i'm sure team Trek's Spring Classics(Paris Roubaix) bikes are completely different.

Fabian rides a Domane. It's designed for rough roads so it will be stronger than a Madone.

Yes it doesnt allow custom frames but he still gets to have his own custom geo - In order to comply with the UCI reg's Trek are offering a limited run off pro-geo frames out of the same special moulds.

For as long as i've followed him his bikes have almost always tipped the scales at around the mid 7's.

He's a big dude with some serious grunt (and serious clout - his bikes aren't std team issue) so I dont think he's too worried about a few hundred grams!! Best to leave 6.8kg to the mountain goats

Not to mention the Domane pretty much is his bike from the ground up - he was the develoment rider for it!

Having ridden a 2009 Astana madone (not Lances) I can say they are slightly different and heavier to the consumer models.
There is a far bit more carbon around the BB area and some custom geo tweeks

From what I read previously I didnt think so either - but since he nabbed the ITT last night in the Vuelta against Martin, the feeling is he's still in a good position to contend.

2012 TDF Malliot Jaune bike.

Considering some the WW fruit he puts on his bike (Nokon's, Speedplay Nano's etc..) even I'm surprised his rides weigh that much..

I am pretty much of the opinion that there is zero value in upgrades that move you lower than 6.8kgs, as that's the UCI limit. If you have the time and money to go chasing lower than that, good on you but for me, 6.8. The stiffest, most aero and durable 6.8kgs you can get If you can get Duranos or Gatorskins into that 6.8, even better. Nothing slows you down faster than flats.

I think I can lose about 1500g off my bike and maybe 6 or 7 kilos off myself... i think that would have had me on the podium today ... if i can get my weight down another 3 or 4 kilos over winter ( never easy! ) ... i will seriously think of chucking some euros at my bike!

Check out joe friel's comments bout the high fat diet. Easier to get to race weight at 60+ years old. If you can handle going coconut milk for your coffee (honestly, that is commitment).

Bouncing around and it looks like if you can go carbon tubular, you lost 250-500 grams without serious expense. Going clincher though is much more challenging. Alloy brake track even more so.

There is no correct answer to this...

Think of it like red wine... the connoisseur will tell you the Penfolds Grange is worth the $$$$ dollars but I can't tell the difference, between that or a $10 bottle.

On the other hand, I appreciate a well built, light bike.
It wont solve my problem of missing podiums, but it puts just a little more of a grin on my chin...

Dimi no Shiraz is worth $$$$..( wine snob joke) 90, 91, 96, 98, 08 are the big Granges to look for in recent years. Dont spend more than $550... or buy mine so I can get more Zipps
