Thanks for the replies, a little light has been shed on the quandary. Serves me right for getting rid of most of my vintage parts when I thought I was getting out of the game. Having said that, 28" wheels would be a very close fit.
Today I put a set of 27's on it, an old Bell saddle and some Northroad bars. Looks promising.
LG, nothing datable came with the bike. The cranks/chainwheel are "Utility" and have no date code.I told the Missus I was going to sell it. Anybody want it?.....Going once...Going twice...Ahh well, I tried. I'll just have to put it with the others.

The old brakes on my Apollo are a bit twisted and don't quite live up to expectations when you grab the brake levers, so instead of forking out $$$ for brand new brake calipers, I thought I'd drop by the transfer station to see if there was an old bike there that I'd be able to salvage some half decent brakes from. They did have a very low level Ricardo [which I was considering picking up for the heck of it as well], but I ended up picking up an old Repco lite 700 for $10. Both were too small for me but the Repco had the better brakes, so that's why it came home with me.

Anyway, after I got home and I had it sitting in the shed, I span the wheels and they were pretty far from straight. But it also looked too good to just to part out without taking it for one last ride. So after my $10 outlay and 2 hours work, I had the wheels trued, brakes working well and the rusted chain un-seized and gears working. Who says cycling is an expensive hobby to get into!

I know it's a low endish bike, but it has good indexed downtube shifters, nice brakes and alloy 700c wheels. So after rambling on to the missus about this high-tech (working brakes and gears in comparison to some of my other bikes makes it high-tech 8) ) bike I picked up, she now thinks that she might like it... Gah, lol. So I may end up having to keep this one and find another bike for parts, which I don't really care about, but means not great brakes on the Apollo for now. It's amazing how easily the fleet starts to grow isn't it......

Note: These pics are taken before I actually cleaned it up.

That's neat, reminds me of the Prophete Clipper I picked up a while ago, same sort of story, looked cool and an unusual brand but can't justify putting the time and money into it :) . If there's anyone out there who wants to start a collection of ladies bikes made by brands no one has ever heard of, get munga's Oeglaend and my Prophete!

Not quite a retro ride, but it's steel. Freebie picked up, been neglected for a while given the amount of oxidation on the exposed bits. The paint is pretty dull too. I figure its around mid 90s from the RSX brifters and rear mech. Front mech is exage. Interestingly there are no model markings, tube material label nor bike shop sticker. All seem to have been removed a long time ago as the paint is consistent all over.

Any tips/help on identifying?

I like the reversed seatpost, haven't seen that before.

Is the Katana an in joke I'm missing? It's probably more like a Colnago, everyone knows the stickers on those get used everywhere else, explains why these are gone.

It just looks like a re-stickered Katana, same colour and style and kit.
Seems to not have an oversized downtube though, which the Katana had. Nearly identical bike anyway.

Tasman wrote:Today I picked up an old frame from the tip shop. I have no idea of its age or brand. In fact I am confused as to whether it's a track frame or a road frame.
It has a rather substantial fork crown but it's not drilled for brakes or guard mounting. The fork ends are forged rather than pressed and have no eyes for guard mounts. The seat stays are nice and slender and brazed on and the bridge is drilled vertically for a guard but, again, there are no provisions for a brake. Track (or road) ends rather than dropouts.
The seat post is close to 26.5mm and the head set is of a type I know nothing about but looks like it could be pre 1940's.
I would appreciate any information you good folks can furnish.

Sorry for the crap phone photos.
I have the same utility cranks on my early leader,
What is the rear spacing? 110mm?
Looks like it could be BSA narrow chain line ?
I'm guessing pre 1930 may be around 26-30 ?
I could be wrong but start a new thread on it as it looks nice and more chance of getting good help as I'm just guessing.
Also is that a Williams chainring as it may be date stamped?.

How much would you reasonably be prepared to part with for Vitus Alu frame in good straight condition? I know the bonding can be sus on these, but what would be a good figure to stick to?
Not sure if it's a 992 or 979.

put some wheels and a saddle on him and check that he won't collapse first, or you might end up calling him Jason, after your dentist's college-graduate son.

It was yours that failed wasnt it? I am a tad wary about the bonded tubes, but a mate bought a 979 in 1985 and raced it till 2001. I'll have the frame checked iver before throwing a leg over.

So far I havent had issues on my 2 bonded frames, and I have been jumping speed humps, and curbs, and even drilled holes through them. I do have some doubt when riding down a massive descent, but for normal riding, its all good.
