Help needed - Early 1900's Road Bike

Hi all,

It's recently come to my attention and into my possesion some very old photos of a relative of mine and his cycling history, of which I did not know existed.

I've attached some photos of him with his bike from back around 1913-15 I believe.

It's now my cycling/restoration dream/goal to find an old racing bike/frame from this time periodand restore it back to it's glory days and add a small homage to him by having his name and club possibly hand painted on the bike.

Of course this is all pipe dreams until I can actually locate a bike to make it all happen.

So it i'm reaching out to the fantastic retro cycling community here to see if anyone has or knows of a bike from this area that would be avaialable to undertake such a project with.

I expect it won't be an easy task to track down what I need. However when one has an attachment like this to past cycling history it would be wasteful not to try and connect the past with today.

When you say "restore" do you mean a full repaint and all period correct parts?
Do you want to do the work your self?
and where are you located?
O and whats the budget? up to $500, $500-$1000 or $1000+

My plan is to do a full repaint and use as many period correct pieces on the bike as I can.

I'd most likely be getting others to do the work on this kind of project though.

I'm in Geelong, The GWCC lettering on his club jersey is for Geelong West Cycling Club.

Budget I've not really sat down to think about. Given it could take years to find a frame and all the parts i'd just spend what I needed to spend to get it done right.

It might be possible to talk with Shane DeGrandi of DeGrandi Cycles - he might be able to point you in the direction of bike collectors in the Geelong area.

look for the "Harvey racer retro old rare... " etc on EBAY its had a poor restoration, is too expensive at the moment and might be a little earlier than you want but it would clean into a nice early path bike. No guaranty who made it either unless there are before photos.

Can't say I'd ever have spotted that given its in the gardening section.

It certainly seems to tick all of the boxes for what I need in a frame. Shame it's so pricey though.

Might need to contact him about the size given i'm only an avg 5'10.
