Vets race (AT) dog trap
Postby mrgolf » Thu Sep 05, 2013 2:57 pm
Hey vets racers. Looking at riding back from the race this weekend but noticing that a fair few roads are dirt in that area. Anyone ridden back from dog trap and have a suggested carbon wheel friendly route?

Your options are:
a: Race on your training wheels
b: Ride softly on the dirt and think of the Strade Bianche going East or South (I think that South is in marginally better condition)
c: Go North and ride on sealed roads all the way but at the cost of a fair bit of extra distance
d: Get a mate to take your training wheels to the race and your race wheels home.
I recommend option d:
I presume you are getting a lift out there?
Cheers,
Cameron

Hmmm... You make some good points, Cameron. Yeah, getting a lift out. Changing wheels is not overly feasible. Would need to change pads over as well.
Perhaps the easiest way is to wander down to the Barton Hwy on the Long Rail road at minimal kmh and then head into Murrumbateman. From there is it plain sailing with bitumen? Was thinking Murrumbateman Rd to Nanima Rd to avoid the dodgy Barton Hwy between Canberra and Murrumbateman.

Cartridge pads are no problem to change with the right allen key.mrgolf wrote:Hmmm... You make some good points, Cameron. Yeah, getting a lift out. Changing wheels is not overly feasible. Would need to change pads over as well.

Alternatively carbon pads on aluminium rims aren't great but they do work. They seem to get better as the rim heats up/you pull harder. Yes you need to check the pads for filings afterwards but they will be fine for one ride. You're only talking about a score of brake applications anyway, just take it easy.
The Barton HWY is dodgy, but there's not many alternatives, Nanima Rd just takes you back onto the Hwy. You could go across to Sutton and back on the Fed. If Long Gully Rd makes you realise that dirt isn't all that bad, you can take Tallegandra Lane to Mulligan's Flat road to take you into Gunghalin.
I've done a few miles on dirt with a road bike, my favourite race course from a while ago in Melbourne even had a 5km dirt section (not my favourite bit, but it didn't detract from the course) dirt roads can be fine once you get used to it.
Cheers,
Cameron

How long and how rough. If it is a graded road I would ride it. Race wheels or not.

Further to skull's post - there is now only 3.5km of gravel left on the first section of Dog Trap Road heading south before you reach the left turn into Isabel Drive, which is now fully sealed and leads you into Murrumbateman. Then, as others have suggested, I'd take the following sealed roads: Murrumbateman Road towards Nanima & Gundaroo (but don't go anywhere near that far), followed after about 8 or 9km by turning right into the Nanima Road to the Barton Highway (12 or 13km), following which there's a hard shoulder (sometimes a little narrow before Hall) all the way to the Federal Highway at Watson (or you can take other roads or bike paths to Belconnen).
By the way, if you continue south on Dog Trap Road past the Isabel Drive turnoff there's a further 11km of gravel, mostly good quality but sometimes roughish, until you can turn left onto the sealed Kaveneys Road, from which it's about 8km to the Barton Highway. After turning right onto the Highway, there's then a hard shoulder - you go past the Nanima Rd turnoff a few km later and continue on past Hall on the shoulder.
BTW, I rode up and back to Murrumbateman via Kaveneys Rd, Dog Trap Rd (& Long Rail Gully Road on the way up) in mid August on 28mm tyres while doing reconnaissance for an audax ride. It would be OK along there on 23mm tyres if you are used to riding a road bike on gravel with narrow tyres and take care not to ride too fast (in case you get a pinch flat).

Thats some good advice. Thanks. I didnt mention that they are tubs, did I? I simply cannot afford a flat.
At the moment, I would consider gently heading back down Long Rail Gully to the Barton Hwy. If Murrumbateman Rd is sealed all the way, I would definitely go that way to Nanima, or if I felt really good, keep going to Sutton Rd and come back in on the Fed. If the weather is nice, I might even head out towards Yass and come back in to Murrumbateman on the Barton.
