Swooping magpie pix

Postby TraceyG » Wed Sep 11, 2013 2:52 pm

Slowly getting back on the bike after an enforced break due to illness and I was pretty sure I would encounter at least one territorial magpie on my first ride so I strapped on the GoPro.

Here are a couple of still shots

I am trying to edit the video and will upload if/when I succeed but these pix are pretty dramatic!

Edit - not sure what has happened with the first pic...on my PC and in Photobucket it shows the entire bird but here it cuts off its head.

Any suggestions for fixing this welcomed.

Right click the image and "open in new tab" or similar - depending on your browser.
Or reduce the image size you upload.

Anyway, a remarkably evil looking bird!

You have managed to capture the stuka dive in all its glory with the full armament of beak, claws & wings on display. Well done.

The forum software will crop large images to the right on smaller monitors, comes up fine on my 22"WS.

800x600px seems to give good results for 90% of users.

Hope this helps.

You're moving so fast you're leaving ripples on the water in the second pic.

hadn't realized how long and narrow their beak is. No wonder they are so successful at poking it into eyes.

clever use of a go pro. thanks.

LOL. Actually, the ripples on the water were caused by an extremely strong headwind. I was struggling to hit 18kmh. But with the tailwind going home I was cruising at 45kmh.

The wide angle of the GoPro lens gives a fish-eye effect that is exaggerating the size of birds beak and
head (relative to its body etc.,.). So it's not as fearsome as the picture suggests, but still big enough
to do major damage to eyes, ears etc.,.

GoPro have just released the GoPro studio App, which has an option to make a correction for the
fish-eye distortion.

Cheers

There's one returned to King St Manly Vale again that is particularly persistent. I'll fit the camera to the helmet and try to catch him next week. Persistent little blighter.

I'd love to see Go Pro footage of you trying to persuade a magpie to be less of a magpie, Dave! :-)

Yea I often "talk" to magpies when I encounter them. You'll understand if I don't post a video of such "talking", this is a family forum after all  .
