Shimano Road and MTB Shoe Sizing

Is it safe to assume that as I currently wear a size 42 Shimano road shoe a 42 MTB shoe will fit?
Looking at these for touring and bashing around in;

I only need a basic shoe such as these (Shimano SH-MT42-N), anyone have experience with this shoe or a similar cheap/moderately priced Shimano MTB shoe with recessed cleats suitable for riding and walking about?

I bought Specialized MTB shoes and a couple of years later bought Shimano road shoes in the same size, and they are the correct fit.
Not sure if that applies to your specific requirements but maybe a guide.
Any others here able to advise on sizes consistency between brands?

You should be ok. I have size 47 Shimano MT-42 shoes, and I am also a size 47 in the RT-31 Road/Touring shoes.

Something to consider is that you would not normally walk much in road shoes, so comfort is less likely to become an issue.

For touring you might want a more relaxed fit - you will have them on all day, and may want to do quite a bit of walking, so your feet will swell and spread.

It's years since I've had Shimano road shoes, but I do find their MTB shoes too narrow for all day comfort.

Pretty sure Shimano use the same last (the pattern that forms the shape & size of the shoe) for all styles, so the fit will be the same. Different materials & constructions will alter final "feel" of each shoe though.

46 road and mtb shoes ... sadly the road shoes have now died after 5 years good service ( or at least been relegated to spares ). Close enough to the same for my feet... I go running in my mtb shoes

I'm going to be the naysayer...I run size 45 Shimano road shoes but 46 in the MTB. As for going cheap...they will hurt you. First pair of mtb shoes were cheap m077's but they had no shape like good athletic shoes should. Now using xc70's and they are much better. If you do go with the MT42's then consider replacing the footbed with something more supportive of your feet...

Thanks Ron, something I forgot is that I also found Shimano's shoe fit to be a bit narrow. I wear one size larger than normal on the roadie.
Think I might try out the fit and buy new touring shoes from a shop.

Four years for a relatively cheap pair of Shimano road shoes for me. Not a bad innings and still have life left in them although the straps are just beginning to split at the buckles.
