Cool New QRs - What to Buy? Where?

Postby Dr_Mutley » Mon Sep 16, 2013 12:55 am

Hi all,
I'm after some new QRs.
Criteria include
#minimslistic
#black
#durable
#reasonably light weight (doesn't need to be uber weight weenie)
#not stupidly expensive!

What cool QRs are people rocking these days? These will be run on ENVE wheelsets. Links to where to get said QRs would be heaps appreciated too...

Cheers
Harry

Just a thought Harry...
You're talking ENVE wheels not STARRS, is reasonably cheap the best idea?

In your shoes I'd be going down the Pinhead route, make it as hard as possible for some scumbag to lift those (S)exxy hoops.

Not to mention the sleek look that no lever gives your steed...

I bought some of these

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RAVX-TITANIU ... 871&_uhb=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And some of these

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Black-43g-Ro ... 8026481%26" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There's zillions of QR's on Ebay.

The first ones I bought have carbon levers which look cool apart from the logo but they're good and strong.
If you were after the anti theft ones there's heaps of them too.

Tune AC-14's is perhaps the best bet - light, sealed, quality. Otherwise, DT Swiss RWS...more expensive and fiddlier but brilliant.
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

What's the quality like on those? The price is right.

SRAM do a really nice titanium skewer that's functional and reasonably light. The aforementioned Kcnc copies don't cam well, have limited throw, making it hard to get a decent clamping force.

I'm using Hope skewers - quite minimalist and reasonably priced at Wiggle (who have plenty to choose from).

Generally such open-cam skewers have fairly poor holding power. Be wary, especially on front wheels, and especially with disc brakes. Disc action can pull your axle out of the drop-outs, then you're in 'the poo'.

These skewers have a lower cam leverage ratio than closed-cam skewers, so often they cannot be closed as firmly; and they tend to have a flat alloy face to grip your drop-outs, rather than a serrated steel face that bites in much better.

Maybe mundane but more secure.

I should have mentioned that I'd only just ordered these and they're in the mail, the others I linked to are very good skewers. I'll report on these as soon as I've had a chance to check them out.

I've had a pair of this shape, though not from this seller http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Titanium-Mou ... 8026481%26" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Spectacularly light and never had an issue with them. Sure there's a theoretical difference between open and closed cam QRs but on a road bike with rim brakes I think if you do them up properly either will do the job just fine.
