2013 Sydney Bike and Lifestyle Show
Postby AUbicycles » Fri Aug 02, 2013 11:24 pm
The date is also pushed back to October (18 - 20) and in addition to Spring Cycle there will more cycling events like Crits and other outdoor cycling events / activities which will make this a bigger event.
It is still early days though hopefully we will see more Aussie bike importers / wholesalers / brands represented - while they have their own road shows for dealers, it would be fantastic to see more being involved in this show.
The stuff-up with online ticket pricing will be sorted this year and while the pricing I have been informed of is not yet competitive and as attractive as Ausbike - I am looking forward to a better and growing show this year and will update when I hear more.

It is fair to note that one of the challenges of bike shows in Australia is that most of the brands (importers) focus on their own road shows or dealer events and it is notoriously challenging to get brands to exhibit, even if visitor numbers are good. This means that in this day an age, getting great attendance from all of the major bike brands will not happen.

I don't understand why businesses tend to avoid such shows and if they say it is the high cost of setting-up a stand then they are stupid. The cost is tax deductible and if they sell equipment off a show then that is most likely additional turnover. OTOH, if show organisers get too greedy then that just gets silly too. There has to be balance.
But the bicycle industry is, in my view, about 25 years behind the times in self-promotion.

However, in saying that, the car shows and anime expos I have been to in the past have been rising in prices over the years. $25-35 is the norm these days for entry. This is a reason why I don't go anymore.
Queequeg, I don't reckon that'll be a viable option. That'll bring in liability issues, and it'll be at a greater loss to them, in the case of an accident.

Car and boat shows are a good comparison - though these are miles ahead and have become massive shows that generate a lot of interest and momentum so can easily command such prices. I believe that secure parking for cyclists will be organised - they had this on previous shows though you need to check up.

I have heard that the annual Motor Show has been put on hold for next year due to costs etc, but the annual caravanning and camping shows seem to be going gangbusters, with large sales of caravans happening at the shows.

The $75 referred to would be the spring cycle entry fee (for the 50km) which includes the bike show ticket.AUbicycles wrote:Might be a typo in the $75 there - good that they have connected up with Spring Cycle.

The 9km Bridge Run is $65 for Aussies and $80 for overseas entries, and the 3.5km Fun Run can be had for $50 for locals and $65 for internationals. Yep, $50 for what is basically a stroll across the Harbour Bridge (closed to cars) and down to the Opera House. You could do it any other day of the year on the bridge footpath for free.

Cool. I'll be in the Powerade Kit. Just went through the course guide and only one change from last year, so should be a good ride!AUbicycles wrote:c u there - I was at the briefing today. The New Zealand effort was awesome. I loved the topographic map. I felt sorry for them as they had flown a few people over to stand around for the day.
I found the guys selling the beetroot juice to be pretty lame.
Some bargains were to be had with helmets and clothing.
There were a few good holiday ideas.
