Moving to Australia

Postby Marco » Mon Feb 26, 2007 2:59 am

Hello forum!

I hope someone can help me. Within a few months I am moving to Australia, to Melbourne. As a dedicated cyclist I obviously would like to train and race in Australia as well. But where do I start? What are good teams or clubs? How do I participate in races?

I am an elite-man, come from Holland and like the longer races (120-200 km).

Thanks for any help!

Marco

I'm sure some vixtorians can give you some more specific advice but.....

Try contacting some clubs near the area you will be staying;

http://www.bicycles.net.au/links/clubs.html

For good training routes use bikely.com to see ones others have listed

Also a Local.Bike.Shop/Store will be invaluable for giveing you the specific information you need.

Do you know what area of Melb. You will be based at?

Thank you for your reply! I will be living north of Melbourne CBD, probably Sunbury. The link you mentioned I already looked at and I saw a lot of clubs. It is pretty hard to decide which is a good one, with more elite-men, training facilities and participating in races. At least, it is for me...

Hi Marco,

I'm from Sydney so can't specifically recommend a Melbourne bike club. However I can recommend that you check the Australian Cycling Federation for relevant info http://www.cycling.org.au this is the organisation that runs competitive cycling at the national level. Their national road calendar http://www.cycling.org.au/Content/Navig ... lendar.htm covers cat 1 and cat 2 road racing.

You also need to find the State competitive cycling equivilant, NSW has one, so I'm assuming that VIC has one as well. Perhaps one of the Victorians could post a link for you.

Have a nice day

Thank you!

Do you know if any club is good? Do they all participate in road races and the national road series?

I'm north of the border, so can't answer the question.

What you could do is look at the entry lists and results of the cat1 and cat2 races and determine what clubs they come from.
