Mystery Frame...870s? 90s? Any good?

Postby schroeds » Sun Sep 08, 2013 7:01 pm

Hi all, I rescued this from from street trash. The lovely ITM headstem attracted me initially, then I noticed the DuraAce headset and BB7400. Closer inspection intrigued: nice welds, tubes that change shape along their length, rather elegant rear stays, braze on FD and a weird combination of downtube shifters (I think) and an internal rear brake cable routing. 3TTT bars don't hurt either.

The paint's a little scratched here and there and the brand is stickered. I can't find anything much from this era about Genesis bikes....there's a highish end Ti/Steel builder in the UK http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but I doubt this is from them?

Pics below....would love to have any thoughts/assessment - worth the effort? Oh and what sort of crankset would I need for this? (Never built an old bike up). Thanks guys.

Thanks Munga....looks like a little alloy shop (hasn't even got a website) so hand built I guess and perhaps that explains its quirks. Might call them to see what they say.

Can anybody tell me what sort of crank I'll need for BB7400? Preferably something that's widely available second hand and cheap.

Want to make it a single speed. ...would this work as a starter?
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-Shim ... 2eca5830a3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or better still could I go this and simply take off the inner chainring?
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/300962699466 ... 1423.l2649" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or Is there some magic about taper length or some such I should know about?

Apologies for nood questions...I'm a bottom bracket virgin :shock:

Thanks!

if the bottom bracket is in very good condition, sell it and buy another crank and an new bottom bracket. they do tend to fetch good money.

Oh OK hadn't seen that coming ... the wiley ways of the bike restorer 8)

Great suggestion thanks.

If I go that track can you tell me what size replacement BB I'd be looking for?

Also whilst I have your brain, is a single speed crankset the same as a standard crankset but with one chainring removed (wincing, I have a nasty feeling tat question might be a bit ridiculous)

ugh.

you need to work out what type of bb you have. my guess is english threading.
then measure the length of the spindle.
you can use a road crankset with one ring removed, but you will need bmx (or fixie) chainring bolts. they're a tiny bit shorter. you could also use some washers. depends on your level of acceptability.
